Yea I called them today to get some money credited back to my account since I just ordered the Area 15m yesterday. I was reconfiguring it online to see how much money I was going to get back and noticed the built in wireless option was gone. I asked the guy about it on the phone and he said it was discontinued and that they were making a better one. I really hate this because I have grown tired of carrying the wireless card with my laptop and would love the ease of having it built in. He told me that the card would still be on my order but now I really feel like I am getting ripped off with an obviously substandard wireless card.

I got 219$ credited back BTW

When you think about it, it really isn't that bad to have a plug-in card. Just think about how far techology has come. The fact that you can be on a mobile computer, with no wires, and on the internet is still pretty amazing, considering that 10 years ago we were all running Windows 95 and 100Mhz Pentium I processors.

Yea dude, damn. Calm down. You can always go out and buy a mini-pci wireless card and install it yourself. It isn't hard to do. I'm not sure about internal cards, but I know the external ones from Orinoco are extremely good.

I took this desktop PCI wireless card apart and used it for another laptop

Boo, that is freaking cool!!! I didn't know you could do that!!!

I've got one of the Orinoco cards by proxima. Very good wireless cards. They have the external antenna connector which is great if you're going war driving because you can hook up a high gain Cantenna to it. You can snatch everything out of the air with this setup.

It does depend on which card you are getting. Some cards do not have mini-PCI inside and it is imbedded in the board itself. The same driver used in the desktop PCI is used for the mini-PCI. The way to tell is the big metal casing around the mini-PCI housing.

If you search for mini-PCI you will find over-priced cards and the selection is nill. Taking apart a desktop PCI is the better option.

Frequency,

I would cancel my internet connection if I was you. That thing must pick up at least a dozen signals in your neighborhood

Are you trying to say people are getting to the internet because I have this antenna hooked up to my laptop? Or is my sarcasm detector not working? This Cantenna is NOT hooked up to the antenna connector on my router. That is the only way someone could get out to the internet.

Besides that they can't get out to the internet through my router even if this high gain antenna was connected to my router because they don't have the WEP keys to my router. You would need billions and billions of packets to be able to break WEP encryption. It can be done but it would take someone who is willing to spend months capturing my wireless packets. I don't get on through my wireless connection except with my laptop. I spend most of my time on my desktop while at home. Only occasionally use my wireless laptop to connect to my home network.

One other note. Just because I can pick them up doesn't mean they can pick up my signal. There is a transmit and receive antenna on my linksys router so even if I had it connected to one but not the other they would only get the transmit signals or the receive signals depending on which antenna this was connected to. (Not unless I had two cantennas connected to the receive and transmit antenna on the router.)

Now with that said, my neighbor has a wireless D-Link router that he didn't configure with WEP and therefore I am able to surf the net through his router. He didn't even change the default password on it. I can log into his router and change anything I like. People just don't care I guess. And without WEP enabled I can snatch his packets out of the air and read them. Poor guy is just not computer savvy.

actually it can be done in less than 6 hours now

less if the network is somewhat heavily traveled and you know how

wrote a paper on it back in 2002

On an off note to this. I found a pretty decent application on TechTV Darktips to check if anyone is on you Wireless Network (router), you can send messages too them if they are. It is called AirSnare, the link is below.

yes, yes but like I said you have to have very high network traffic. Like billions of packets last I read. It would take someone a long time to gather that many packets off the WIRELESS segment of my network. I have a wired network and a wireless one. I have on a few occasions transfered a large video file from my laptop to my desktop through my wireless connection. If they happen to be lucky enough to be around when I do that then they could capture enough packets to break the WEP key. But it is soooo rare that I have that many packets flying around my WIRELESS network segment.

wow now im glad i got the wired instead of the wireless.

Dem pesky packets! Always flyin' 'round when I am doing things wit da compyuter!

You need that candle that scares off bugs - works for me.

No more packets!

well then my neightbors must be high traffic folks... 5 and change.

Then again, they are stupid enough to have SSID running and to not limit the bandwidth of their wireless networks through the router (why more routers don't offer that as an option is beyond me).

It's not working. He's saying there is no way you should need to pay for Internet yourself. Help yourself to the neighbors'.
