Networking/Lan problems

Hey guys I have an odd problem. I have a Linksys Wireless-g broadband router. Its all hoked up to my modem and all and im running a wire from one of the ports on the back to my main computer. I get full dsl capabilitys on my main computer but when I try to hook up my alienware laptop on the second port with a networking cable best buy guaranteed would work, it doesnt get any internet at all. The computer senses the connection it just doesnt get one. But then when I hook up my sisters dell laptop to the same networking cable on the second port it works like a charm. But the weirdest part....whenever I hook up the networking cable coming straight from my dsl modem it works perfectly. Anyone have any suggestions? I spent well over 2 hours with alienware on the phone and they had no solutions. Thx guys

Check this out, if any of the net cards you are using are giganet, then I believe that these cards are auto-sensing type, meaning that regardless if you have a straight cat-5 patch or a cross-over, they will sense that cable and make the adjustments accordinglly. So basically I am going to go out on a limb here and tell you that the cable is a cross-over. If the cable is cross-over then change it out to a patch cable.

There are a few things you need to make sure of first. 1) Make sure that you have plugged the laptop into a port on the back of the router that is a regular port, and not the uplink. 2) Make sure that the DHCP server is enabled on the router. 3) In WindowsXP, right click on "My Network Places" on your desktop, and find the "Local Area Network" connection. Right click it, and press the proporties button. It should then give you a new window with a list of services/protocols. Double click TCP/IP and make sure that it's set to Obtain an IP address automatically. Then go down to DNS and make sure it's set to auto obtain. Save all the settings, and reboot your laptop and try it. If this doesn't work, PM me or Instant Message me and I will try to help you out.
