5760 Short Review

Ok here is the info.

I ordered my new 5760 from powernotebooks.com and the order process, customer service and shipping times were totally stellar.

The latop came securely packaged as per standard with Sager.

The laptop itself is a dream! Having previously owned a 5720 I was already familiar with the simple and sexy looks of the 57xx series but there was some definate horsepower mods under the hood! I was looking forward to seeing if Sager/Clevo had addressed the sound issues that were present in the 5720 that being the hiss on the headphone jack and the incompatibility problems with the Audigy 2 ZS Notebook sound card.

My laptop came configured with the 7900 GTX Go Graphics module, 1680x1050 WSXGA+ screen, 2 Gigs of 633 Ram, Intel Duo 2.0 GHz 2500 processor with 633 FSB, 80 GB SATA/150 drive and the Pioneer dual layer dvd-rw drive and onboard high definition sound. I use a Logitech G5 gaming mouse in my right hand and SNIPER Gaming Pad under my left hand to supplement the laptop for first person games such as Elder Scolls: Oblivion in which I just do not like using laptop wasd keyboard layouts since I have big big hands LOL

The first thing I did once into windows was set my Power Management features to ALWAYS ON to disable the power throttling of the processor so I have 2 cores running at 2.0 GHz instead of 933 MHz. I also got into the NVIDIA settings screen and set battery performance and A/C performance to MAX PERFORMANCE.

The second thing I checked was the sound and I am very very very happy to report that the HISS is GONE in this revision of the 57xx!!! After playing through some games, music and movies I see absolutely NO reason whatsoever (IMHO) to get a third party sound solution. The sound is great and there are no audio artifacts to be found anywhere!

The laptop breezes through all basic windows updates and other tasks without problems. A full virus scan of the drive took 3 minutes, Spybot SD scan took 1 and a half minutes and the Oblivion installation clocked in at 4 minutes including boot time. Speaking of booting I am from power on to desktop in 25 seconds flat. Perty nifty!

Now the most important thing IMHO, GAMES! I have played Oblivion on this sexy beast now for almost an hour testing the impact of many of the various environments, weather conditions, and battle scenarios of the game on the 5760. I am running MAX settings at my native resolution of 1680x1050 with 4x AA enabled. The 5760 wallups through the game with nare a hiccup to be found! I can do battle in the arena, fight wolves in the forest, summon daedroth's on unsuspecting bandits, take a nap at my house in Cheydinhall, get town guard's fighting amongst themselves or go on quests for the Dark Brotherhood in high style on my 5760 whether it be in rain, snow, sunshine, starlight or torch light.

It should be stated that I have a very clean install of XP on the machine and while gaming I always disable things like anti-virus and other background services not essential to the windows platform.

This is really saying something as I have a desktop running an Opteron 165 processor at 2.2 GHZ, 7800 GT OC'd, DFI LANPARTY UT mobo, 2 GIGS of G.Skill Ram and 80 Gig SATA that gets some big hiccups and lag in Oblivion especially in outdoor environments with all that pretty grass to render

Other games like Counter-Strike: Source, Battlefield 2, FEAR, Doom 3 etc. all run at max settings and very very high frame rates no problem at native resolution.

The laptop does not get too hot at all and my hands are comfortable resting on the palm rest while typing. The screen is brilliant and offers the perfect balance of performance, screen real estate, and beauty when paired with the 7900 GO GTX graphics module.

I did not order the bluetooth module with my 5760 so I took the extra gray wire for that which is installed in the laptop and hooked it to the aux jack of my internal wireless card to boost reception a bit as per other threads you will find by searching these forums. I wasn't having any wireless connectivity problems before but I must say that this action did boost my performance a bit.

PROS:
-Laptop sound issues have apparently been fixed over the 5720
-7900 GO GTX absolutely kicks butt no questions asked even in Oblivion!
-Intel Duo processors give great gaming performance at least as good as the Sonoma platform did!
-Sleek 57xx looks
-Pretty good 2 1/2 hour battery life for a powerhouse like this (Screen on full bright and all Throttling turned off) !

CONS:
-No more PCMCIA Slot! Sager is using a diferent slot now and you will not be able to use a Audigy 2 ZS card in this (not that you need to anymore though!)
-Price (but that is only until you use it then you suddenly will find yourself not caring you just lost 2 and a half bills )

If you have $2500.00 + for a lappie that can do it all then grab one of these puppies up pronto and you will be one happy gamer or enthusiast or whatever it is you call yourself lol.

Excellent write up. Thanks for the info!

I'm assuming you didn't pay the $200 No Dead Pixel Guarantee...

EDIT (Just saw in another post you did buy the guarantee)

LOL yea I bought the no dead pixel warranty. For me personally the wait was going to be long enough without having to worry about sending my new baby back to Sager for replacement This laptop is great. It has all the great qualities of the 5720 with that models issues addressed quite effectively.
