dell 5150 charging problem

i picked up a broke 5150 for cheap (first mistake). pieced it together with a reman motherboard and everything works except it doesnt recognize the charger. i cehcked voltage out of my charger and it is 19.4volts but every time i plug the charger into the wall socket it creates a quick spark at the wall socket. it cant be another motherboard. this is the second motherboard i have tried but this is the first motherboard to actually boot up so i dont know if its a motherboard or a charger problem.

so youve swapped out to anotherboard but havnt tested the charger?

i tested the charger with a meter and got 19.5 volts at the plug. my battery is dead so i have no way of testing if there is a motherboard failure.

i just went to a friends house to try her ac adapter and it still shows no sign of charging. she has a weaker pa-12 charger rated at 19.5v and 3.36 amps but it should still show a charge. my pa-13 charger is a 19.5v 6.7amp charger.

the 3.36 amp charger isnt going to cut it. you need to test it with the 6.7 try testing YOUR charger with HER dell to see if the machine will charge or turn on this way we know its not the charger thats conked out on you but rather another bum board.

i realize its not powerful enough to run the comp but shouldnt it still register a charge? when i plugged it in the battery light does nothing on both chargers. i once again tried it with the battery in and then removed it and there was no change.

Try my suggestion first because you may also have a shot battery. testing the charger on the other machine will ensure that its not the charger.

ok. i ended up purchasing a new charger and that did the trick. i bought a used charger off of ebay and the bastard sent me one that didnt work. lesson learned......
