wsxga+ core duo suggestions?

Hey guys,

I need to get a new notebook ASAP because I just sold my old one already.

Here's what I'm looking for:
  • Screen: A 15" screen with something greater than XGA or WXGA resolution... so I guess the main choices SXGA+ or WSXGA+ (I dont mind widescreen).
  • CPU: A Core Duo processor (preferrably 2.0 GHz) which I can probably ugprade to Merom at the end of the year
  • GPU: Something with dedicated memory, so I can play the occasional game (although I'm not a huge gamer at all)
  • Memory: I don't care how much RAM comes with it, cause if it doesn't come with enough I can buy some online really cheap
  • Price: Under $2000

Sounds easy, right? Well so far it has been very difficult to find a Core Duo machine with a good screen. HP and Compaq don't have a single 15" laptop with a resolution higher than WXGA, and the Compaq Business line of notebooks is ridiculously expensive. The entire Toshiba Satelline line doesn't have a high resolution screen either.

I came across the Asus Z96J on these forums, but I can't wait until July to get one; anyway, the battery life isn't supposed to be so great, anyway.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks
-Brent

Asus v6j (SXGA+). IBM/Lenovo T60 (SXGA+)... I'm sure there are many more but I'm only really into thin & light <6lbs 14/15" notebooks so those are on top of my head.

Dell e1505. plus use of coupons makes it alot cheaper

The V6J only has a 1.66 GHz processor... are there any other options with a faster processor?

What other places can you customize the V6J at besides StarTech?

I second the E1505, i have one. the resolution is good (wsxga+ 1680x1050). Core duo 2.0GHz

now about upgrading to Merom, i do not think that yonah capable mobos are compatible with Meroms... theres a pin difference i believe (correct if wrong plz). So if u want merom, either wait, or ur gonna have to get a new computer when it comes out....

Most Asus sold are essemble so you cannot configure the cpu. I checked around like c9tech, proportable, gear2play, powernotebooks etc but they are all essemble. I thought there was many more but obviously not... Anyway StarTech has good ratings. Check out resellerratings.com http://www.resellerratings.com/seller2549.html

i ordered a dell e1505 with the wsxga screen, 1.66 duo core processor, 1gb ram, 100gb hdd, and 9-cell battery, dvdrw, with gma950. i canceled that order because a 15.4 is way too big. came out to under 1000 after taxes, with coupon.

so i reordered a e1405 with wxga+ screen, 1.87 duo core, 1gb ram, 100gb hdd, gma950, 9-cell battery, minus the dvdrw, for about the same price. i got the 1.87 because the 2.0 might use the battery too fast? anyway, the whole point is that i havent found anything other than dell that meets the wxga+ or wsxga resolution requirements. even loaded, the dells won't be over 2000, though i'm sure you know that the e1505 comes can be fitted with a x1400 tops, while the e1405 only has integrated gma950.

there's probably more options if you look at 17" as well...

What does everyone think of:
-Acer Travelmate 8204
-ASUS V6J
-ASUS Z96J
-Dell E1505
-Fujitsu LifeBook E8210
-Toshiba Tecra M5

All are about the same and I can't decide.

How can people put in Merom's if Merom isn't out yet?

The E8210 will have the BEST screen between those (and maybe all other non-fujitsu laptops) laptops.. I'd give my vote to the Fujitsu as long as you're not a big gamer.
