Well EVERYTHING is usually delayed with Intel and Microsoft, so it might just be true...

i've seen a lot more discussion saying it's supposed to be august, but it could all be wrong. what i was just a bit unsure about in this article is that it's 5 months old, so the information could have changed. i'm too lazy to go look up more articles to confirm or reject a september release.

Dudes, I got an ES 2.0 Merom for $475 shipped. I bought a total of three and am just keeping two. I can't believe given my trading record no one wants it. It is what I paid for it (well I paid 464 for each of them but I got to charge for shipping. Love you guys but not losing money). So if someone wants it check it out in the FS thread. I am typing on the one I will sell right now that is in my E1405.

BTW, it is very likely it will not be out till Septemeber and not in availability as a separate cpu till past that point and at a high premium. Just my two cents...

How is the current processor working out for you?

Did you notice a big difference between the Yonah and Merom?

Will the ES differ in ANY way from the final product release?

Input is appreciated!

Yep, when I pop one of these into a regular 975 board I got all UNLOCKED multis. Otherewise it is the same as what the final release will be. Works great in all three lappies. I use them with DDR2 533 Cas 4 as the DDR2 667 Cas 5 is finicky with these 2.0 ghz processors. Oh well, you get better bandwidth with CAS4 DDR2 533 anyway. Unless you get an 800fsb motherboard and chip (i.e. totally new laptop) this is the way to go. SiSandra proves this which is why I use DDR2 533 RAM in my systems anyway.

I am keeping two, but am happy to share the wealth by selling one at my cost to someone.

I just got my E1705 and want to buy two 1 Gb sticks of ram, but will probably hold off for a bit until the Merom processors are for sale, so we definitely if it's compatible with DDR2 533 or DDR2 667.

ES chips are like beta software, they have bugs. You may or may not encounter those bugs, but still its more than final product.
They have great overclock potential in desktops because of unlocked upwards multipliers.

I would say stick with a 1.66ghz Core Duo and just buy a Core 2 Duo (merom) 2ghz CPU when it is released. They will be drop in, and folks here on the forum have tested their laptops with them and they work.

To me waiting till something is released isn't practical because there is always going to be something new released, some kind of price change, upgrade, etc. This is the technology world, stuff changes everyday, and when it trickles down to us (the consumers) then that means this change was planned months ago.

That's an out-of-date article.

Intel announced at their analysts meeting last month (or maybe it was April) that the Merom will launch in August. That said, they didn't get any more specific than that (as to what part of the month, though I would expect earlier rather than later), nor is that any indication of when the chips will actually reach the channel in respectable quantities.

But what everyone else is saying is true--Intel has officially announced significant (up to 60% on some processors) price cuts accross their entire product line which will take place at the end of July (rumor is July 23rd). Even if you don't end up going with Merom, you'd be able to save a bundle just by waiting another month anyway.

Some benchmarks on three CPUs using the multithreaded CineFormHD encoder (one of the most hardcore CPU abusers around). These tests were conducted encoding a series of 1280x720 videos from identical uncompressed sources.

The 2.0GHz Merom is 28% faster than a 1.83GHz Yonah and 22% faster than the 2.16GHz Yonah. The same Merom is also 13% faster than an Athlon X2 4400.

Will this have any affect on gaming performance? Highly unlikely.

assuming that upgradeing from a 1.66ghz to a 2ghz merom will have a gain of around 35 - 40%?
I'd say that's a fairly good estimate - it would all depend on your application of course.

I like to use the CineFormHD encoder as a benchmark because it's a real life application that I actually use, so the figures have some meaning to me - as opposed to calculating Pi to 32m places, for example. So I'd say that in the case of the CineFormHD encoder, you'd most likely see a 34%-35% rise.

Very true to madcow.
Before I bought my M1710, I was thinking if I should wait for Merom. But then I think, when its released, it would have all kind of problems. If I wait, 800fsb version will release. And if I have waited again, 45 nm processors release. So, how long can I wait for?
I will definitely wait until Merom and DX10 card with windows vista all together.

If you upgrade little by little, sometimes is lot more expensive than buying a brand new lappy later on.

I had M170, but no gonna change before next summar after 8xxxGTX, merom and windows vista.
I am planning on picking up a m1210 for my wife and will get the cheapest duo I can. When the OS's support 64bit and the prices have dropped, I will plop in a decent Merom for her and the laptop should get a nice upgrade.
