I have a the same problem with Dell 700m speakers. But I have replaced it with new speakers buying from eBay. It works well now.

Broken Speaker part

My 700m has the same problem. The wires are cleanly cut where they enter the hinge, so presumably the speaker wire shifted and was guillotined by the screen hinge closing. The laptop is long out of warranty. Dell wanted $170 just to take a look, so I opened it up.

There's just enough wire left at the speaker, about 0.5", to strip. The replacement will need to be real thin though to fit through the hinge.

I was able to find one company, PChub, listing this part as "Dell Inspiron 700m Speaker Set", part# 4014J1, used for $15, but they are currently out of stock:

I've seen and heard about this problem with the Dell 700m speakers quite often. The audio on the dell 700m either cuts in and out all the time as the lcd is lifted and shut. Or there is NO audio Dell 700m at all. VERY common problem and seems to be due to the type of wiring used. I've seen this problem often and does require soldering skills. You do not need to replace the entire lcd, but will need to do some disassembly. Use of the proper equipment is vital. Shoot me an email if you have more questions concerning this issue on the Dell 700m or other Dell laptops and I will try and help>
