Steinberg Wavelab.

There isnt one.

I am not being a smartass or lying, I am being serious, it really depends on what you are planning on doing, little more info isnt a bad idea, for example both programs mentioned already are primarily single file editors primarily and there are much better for say, Loop music creation, or Multitrack recording and sequencing, midi and notation based music creation, etc.

PS For single file editing I prefer Adobe Audition 1.5, havent tried 2.0 yet to say if that maintains the quality of it as they went with a more traditional approach for their sequencer in it is what i have been told.

Audacity is a good program I use quite often, I tend to avoid giving money to steinberg as a rule, and the one I use most at the moment on linux is ReZound.

Anyone still use Cooledit?
Cooledit was bought by Adobe some time ago, and thus became Adobe Audition. At 1.0 it was nearly identical to the last version of CoolEdit, 1.5 added a few fairly nice features onto it and was(And still is) my favorite program for single file editing, however I dont run Windows anymore and havent for some time so I dont get to use it much.

That should read Syntrillium(As in the people that made Cool Edit) was bought by Adobe, and thus Cool Edit became Adobe's property.

It depends what you like.

I have Sony Sound Forge and it is good for single track editing. It's very plain and simple, easy to learn. Nothing very bad to say about it. It's just what I want an audio editing software to be.

Adobe Audition (CoolEdit) is a multitrack editing solution. It requires a bit more learning than Sound Forge, but allows multiple tracks. Composition and such can be made with it, unlike Sound Forge.

I haven't seen an audio editing software with "layers" similar to Adobe Photoshop, where I could apply effects and put then on or off depending what I like to produce. That's a feature I really would like to have.

Don't you just love it when someone creates a thread and doesn't bother to respond even after a dozen posts?

You wasted your time with "I second that, its very good."

Samplitude and Sequoia supposedly have the best sounding audio engine out there.

There is also SAW studio , Nuendo, Logic, Cakewalk Sonar too...and more. you need to do your own research and see which is best for your needs.

I use Sound Forge. Works perfect for what I need.

Steinberg and Audition 1.5 are the two that I think are the best in terms of price/ability. Audition 2.0 is nice as well but I still prefer 1.5. I am told that Samplitude Pro is supposed to be insanely good but for $1,000 bucks I do not think I will be finding out anytime soon. Download the trials of each and see which you like the best.

Audacity is a pretty good program considering its free...

What exactly are you looking to do with this "audio editing" program?

Suggests to try FlexiMusic Wave Editor, an audio recording and editing software.
