How to correctly apply Artic Silver 5? Overheating in my PC!!

HI all,

Recently just built a system, and my temps are quite high:
  1. Video Card (x850xt w/Arctic Cooling Silencer): Idle @ 40 Load @60
  2. Processor (Intel Pentium D 3 GHz NO OC, with Artic Cooling Freezer 7 PRO) Idle @ 56!!!! Load @ 65!!

Those are in degrees celsius. So I'm wondering if I used to much/too little AS 5 thermal compound? I used about half of the 3.5 oz tube to do my X850XT core and my processor core. I applied the AS 5 to both the core and heatsink on both.

But the temps still seem a little high to me, especially the processor, so I was wondering if I used the AS 5 right.

Thanks~

omg you used wayyyyy too much. I dont know what size i have, but its the smallestt tube. Ive done 7 or 8 cpus with it and 2 videocards, and its about half way done.

I put a SMALL dab, slightly larger than a grain of rice, on my cpu and spread it around with a razor blade. Then put the heatsink on, and give it a twist.

also, what heatsink are you using?

So using too much could cause those temps?

My heatsink is the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 PRO: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835186134

If I used WAY too much, can I clean it with rubbing alc and then redo it?
Also, I am spreading with a credit card, is that a bad idea?

yes, too much paste can deffinatley case the high temps. And yes, clean with alcohol and start over.

a credit card is fine.

do you have a digicam? Take a pic of your next application so we can tell you how it looks.

Ok. Also, do I want to spread the BB-sized drop around or just mount and twist the heatsink?
I have to head off to work now, but I'll de done in 12 hours. Going to re-do it then.

In this case, since your cpu has an IHS (integrated heat sink), letting the heatsink itself spread around the paste will work fine as well. If you're not good at spreading around paste, then this is deffinatley an option.

Ok. Just got done. I put a BB sized drop of AS 5 on the CPU and spread it around EVENLY with a razor blade so that there's a VERY thin, uniform coating all over, from edge to edge and top to bottom. Looks just like the picture in the instructions.

Temps still at 60* idle...
Does this paste require a break in time?
yes, it does, but you wont get down to where it should be from 60.

what heatsink do you have?

also, try the method of letting the HS spread out the dab.

Ok I have cleaned it and am letting the heatsink spread.
I have the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 pro.
My processor fan just runs slowly. How can I tell it to speed up?

Mr Roboto,

I figured it out...it was the fan on the heatsink. I plugged it into the 4-pin connector near the processor, which made its speed temperature controlled. The fan was not ever spinning more than 1K RPM. I plugged it into a 3-pin connector near the SATA ports, and it now spins at 2.8K RPM, resulting in processor temps of 38* C IDLE and 45*C LOAD.

Thanks for your help!

lol, sorry, i forgot you allready told me what heatsink you have

glad you figured out your problem though.

Still have a question though. What's the best way to break in the AS 5? Leave my computer on for days on end, or just little bits at a time?
leave it on, the constant heat is best

Last I checked, Arctic Silver's own website had a detailed, and illustrated, how-to guide for their thermal compound.

A program called Prime95 has a torture test which stresses and heats up the CPU.

but karma, that doesn't increase his post count any.

there are many tutorials/videos showing the proper way to use thermal compounds, and karma is correct in that the AS5 website has excellent content on the matter...I know it's AMD, but there's even this video - http://images10.newegg.com/uploadfil...paste-high.wmv - provided by newegg...

as for this thread, it's cleaned up a bit and a 3 day ban for the original poster, no need for personal attacks when people are trying to help you...
