i have just moved to my uncle's house, and the internet is not working. on both my laptop and desktop, the wireless detects and connects with no problem, but i can not actually get to any wedsites. every time it says "connection timed out" or "unable to connect." i have tried with both firefox and ie, nothing gets any different results.

we have also tried manually putting in the ip, dns, and other stuff, but nothing gets any results. any ideas?? both of my computers usually have no trouble getting on any other kind of wireless net. heeellllppppp

i am on my cousin's computer. their computers all work fine on the web, but mine don't. that is part of what makes this problem so confusing.

i am not sure, for the modem connect. it is just a linksys wireless router...

Here are some things to try:
Are you sure that the wireless access point that your wireless adapter is detecting is actually the one for your uncle's network? Does it have any kind of authentication or encryption (WEP, WPA, etc.)?

From a cmd.exe window, do an ipconfig /all. Note the default gateway, DNS server(s), and DHCP server. See whether you can ping them. Is the default gateway address that of the wireless access point?

Also, in your web browser, check your connection settings to see whether you're trying to use a proxy that doesn't exist on the new network.

One other thing: Is the IPSEC Services service running?

also, they might have a mac address filter turned on.

yes i am sure it is the correct one, no encryption, i have tried the config, no luck. no proxy either, everything is set to auto detect ip and dns. still no problem getting on the network, just no actual web connection.

my uncle has called his uber tech guy, and hopefully he can sort this out.

Paste the results of ipconfig here. Does it have any "extra" stuff in there?
Last computer i worked on had IPV6 enabled.

Does it get an IP address from DHCP? If so, can you ping the gateway IP?

Are there other computers on the same network using wireless?

i will try the ip thing again and put the results up. i obviously can't paste them cause the comp can't get online... yes, there are currently 3 other computers on this network in the house, one of which i am on now.

did you try Roboto's MAC filtering idea??
I personally use it on mine, specifically to keep people like you off of it

i plugged an ethernet cable into the router, and i still can't get on. i will type the ipconfig out here, let me know if anything is out of place, wireless networking is outside of my (admittedly limited) area of expertise.

windows ip config
host name........... ....gort
primary dns suffix....
node type................hybrid
iprouting enabled.......no
wins proxy enabled.....no
dns suffix search list....gt01.aol.com

ethernet adapter local area conn
media state...........media disconnected
description............broadcom 440x 10/100 integrated controller
physical address.....00-0D-56-AC(and so on)

ethernet adapt. wireless net conn.
connection specific dns suffix.....gt01.aol.com
description..............................dell wireless wlan
physical address.......................00-90-96(and so on)
dhcp enabled...........................yes
auto config enabled..................yes
ip address...............................192(normal)
subnet mask............................255(normal)
default gateway.......................192(normal)
dhcp server.............................(^same as default gateway)
dns servers..............................25.25(so on)

that is it. like i said, direct ethernet doesn't work either. if someone lets me know about the mac filter i will try to mess with that, but despair is setting in.

Suppose it would help to know what sort of router he has and also might want to make sure there isn't a low limit on the number of users. I can't remember what the default is, but it could be three in your case and that's why you can't get on..
Just go to the setup and you'll see all this stuff and if you can't find the manual just go to the routers website and download it. Also might want to make sure you're on the right channel.
and no problem with the rep. I'm maxed out, so I just hand it out like candy to people who post what I like to see

one last thing. Have you tried power cycling the router and while you're at it, might not hurt to also power cycle the modem. Sometimes they're stupid like that..

edit- forgot to mention this. That was free rep for and please no need to pay back or anything. I'm maxed out, so if I get much more I'll go over the edge and end up in the red..

2.14 billion

edit- funny thing is my modem crapped out on me last night. I thought it was the router and ended up resetting everything, only to find out the digital phone/cable modem was the culprit. That really sucked and now I have to reset all my settings and add all 11 MAC addresses back into the filter
it does work now though

Since I do not know the status of the DNS settings you have manually entered in there.

See if you can ping the gateway IP from your computer. If it replies, then take out the DNS settings.

got it all sorted out, if not fixed. the problem was, wait for it, aol! hooray for them. 2 techies from a company my uncle is financing just stopped by and they found it no less that extremely bizarre. apparently my uncle has aol time warner cable, which then requires the computer to have aol installed and connected before allowing any other internet access. i did not know that was legal/possible, but apparently it is.

so now i need to find a job and get my own apartment asap so i can get on the int3rwebs without tainting either of my computers with aol, the scourge of mankind. thanks for the help and suggestions tho, the tech guys did pretty much everything that was suggested before stumbling on the real problem.
