Which screen does your M1710 have? - Page 9

Hey Joker, is the difference in keyboard colour quite subtle then? I can't see much difference in your photos.

The LG certainly looks to have better blacks. Bear in mind when comparing, though, that the M1710 has default video settings tailored to a particular screen. I suspect that screen to be the SEC3155, as it looked about right to me "out of the box", whereas the SEC5557 required considerable changes to the default contrast/gamma settings.

When you ghost your system over, you might have trouble with the wireless networking. When I had my mainboard changed, the wireless network authentication stopped working. I tried making new profiles but just got some very weird errors. I had to do a full uninstall/reinstall to get it working. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if there were problems with Bluetooth - the last driver I installed seemed to spend a good while updating the firmware. If you put a OS with the new driver onto a notebook with a Bluetooth card containing older firmware then it probably won't work.

Thanks I'll keep that in mind but I noticed that the default video settings for both in the nVidia panel is the same so it shouldn't be a problem there. As for bluetooth I don't have a BT device in my system so that shouldn't be an issue either. Regardless I think I'll just start fresh and get rid of all the dell bloat and install what I need to because when I formatted the old HD, the dell restore partition no longer worked. Edit: Oh about the keyboard color, it's very noticeable to me. The new broken one has more flimsy sounding buttons (they make a rattling sound when typing) and it is an uglier dark gray color. I'll see if I can take a good pic tomorrow to show the color difference. Edit 2: The LG screen looks a lot nicer in games. The colors are much deeper than the Sharp which surprises me because I thought the Sharp was an excellent display.

Maybe we are at cross purposes... I meant that the default settings seem always to be the same regardless of the supplied screen type, even though different screen types have different characteristics. That is to say, the default settings are tailored for a particular screen type, which may not be the one actually supplied.

My order is still in pre-production, estimated delivery 20 July. This might not work out too well, as I'm on vacation from the 19th, and I was hoping to have the new one to take with me. I don't really want to take the old one along in case something bad happens to it, which would make the exchange rather tricky, to say the least. Also, I don't want the new system showing up while I'm away then Dell getting all shirty because they can't get hold of me to arrange picking up the old one. I think I'd better give them a call.

Oh, did you manage to take that photo of the keyboards?

I didn't take a photo yet but I'll do it now although the other one is sitting outside in a bag (it had a broken button so Dell overnighted a replacement). Ok I just tried taking pictures of the color difference but it doesn't show up in the pictures so I guess it's a subtle difference. In person you can see it pretty well since one of them is darker than the other and the blue markings on the buttons are more faded looking.

No the Sharp isn't bad at all, it's an excellent display with it's own pro's and cons. It just doesn't have as deep colors as the LG but it does have better grays. I think for gaming/movies LG is superior but for photoshop work where color reproduction matters, Sharp is better since it actually displays black-to-gray transitions better.

Cool here's hoping you get an LG!

My status just jumped to "dispatched" so I may even get it tomorrow. I'm desperately hoping for an LG, of course, though I don't know whether they even use them at all for the European models. The online packing slip just says:

230-10041 17" UltraSharp Wide Screen WUXGA (1920 x 1200) Display with TrueLife

You might be able to call a service rep and ask them what your service tag is and then check.

I suspect you are right, but we shall see. At least it should be better than the shitty SEC5557 that I have at the moment.

I already have my service tag, though the Dell support site isn't recognising it yet. But what could I check? As I said before, Dell doesn't seem to provide LCD manufacturer info in the UK.

BTW can someone tell me what's the procedure when you replace your system? You have 2 systems and you have to send old one, but who pay for that?

Dell arranges to collect the first system from you, at their expense.

so what does this mean? This is from my order...

KF323Module,Liquid Crystal Display 17WU,Red,Sharp,M1710

Is this a Sharp (brand) screen? My i9100 had a sharp screen at one point and it was indeed the best screen I ever had. Anyone else have it?
any idea what screen this will be??

UG503 MODULE, LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 17WU, BLACK, SAMSUNG, M1710

It is a replacement system of my M170. I guess it was a previously order and return system. I did see the original ship date is 06/19/06, but I get replace on 07/07/06. Anyway, hope it is a good Samsung screen. Not all the Samsung are bad, at least the Samsung on my M170 was good (K9922) but return because it has LCD burn marks on screen....

I'm not liking the LG on my M1710 at all. It has a strange dark patch in the top right, and the left 15% or so of the screen has a strange, pinkish tint to it. I'm going to get it exchanged.
