Which screen does your M1710 have? - Page 15

Yeah it's all going good. A few things I noticed though. My original M1710 came with a Samsung battery with 2% wear, out of the box. This new system came with an "SDI" battery with 4% wear out of the box. I'm keeping the Samsung.

Also, I got a Sony Q58a with this system, as opposed to an NEC 6650A with my old system. The Sony is definitely more "whiney" playing DVDs than the NEC. It's really noticeable actually. The NEC is very quiet, so I'll probably try to get the drive exchanged quick. Shame really. The Sony's a good drive otherwise. My M1210 has the same drive, and the same whine.

Just swap the best components and build yourself the perfect M1710. I plan to keep this Hitachi HD and maybe even DVD drive unless the new one they ship me has an NEC.

Yeah WilliamG, congrats. It's great to hear that you've received a near perfect replacement. I'm sure you'll be fine with the Seagate & as you've heard from my experience that the Seagate 7200rpm drives are generally slightly quieter than the Hitachi but the reason I bought the Hitachi that I have is basically because they're cheaper.

Oh Joker, your DVD burner is the TSST right?

Yep, I ran some tests between the systems, after I ghosted to the new system. The Seagate has better access times, better burst speeds (122mb approx vs 114mb approx on the Hitachi) and has less CPU utilization than the Hitachi, but the Hitachi is a little quicker with a 41.2MB/s transfer rate vs 39.4MB transfer rate on the Seagate. I repeated the tests to make sure of these figures. The Seagate is a little quieter, though it makes some ugly seek sounds. I quietened it down using Notebook Hardware Control and it didn't affect benchmark times at all, and now it really is the quieter drive of the two. I'm definitely much more pleased with this LG screen in the 2nd system, that's for sure. I puke everytime I think about the Samsung panel replacement I received prior to the full system replacement. The Samsungs really are awful screens by comparison.

Yep, I like it so far though it can get a bit loud at times - it's much much better than the crappy Philips DVD drive though.

Have you tried installing original EA games CD-ROM using that drive yet? I originally had the same TSST drive on my E1705 & ran into problems installing original EA games & believe it or not even Microsoft Office 2003 Pro. Mine just wouldn't read those CDs. Then contacted Dell tech support chat & was near to getting the tech agree a burner swap before he suddenly demanded I contact the relevant software vendors for replacement CD-ROMs... Damn, I was like WTF?!?!? That same tech even refused my request for a LCD replacement!!! I ended up spending 1 & 1/2 hrs on chat with him, achieving nothing! And also lost some money as in a fit of anger, I went on to buy my NEC burner that is stated on my sig... nevermind, I'm gonna be getting that TSST drive replaced soon...

My replacement E1705 that came with the 7900GS to replace my 7800go came with the LG V2 and it totally wrongs, and the brighness is easily 30% brighter than the LG screen my last E1705 had. very nice, pretty uniform too.

Without a doubt it's the LG panel that is by far the best. The Sharp display is the second best but it lacks the contrast and saturation the LG offers although it does have better grays. The Samsung is by far the worst and hopefully Dell has stopped using them for their M1710 (at least for the US market). Ultimately I'd like to see Dell use LG exclusively for all its markets.

I do like to see Dell use LGs exclusively since it is currently the best but I think that this may not be the case in like 6 months or 1 years time. I mean Dell will constantly provide feedback to its component suppliers & even if they don't, Dell may just stop getting supplies from a particular supplier for a particular part & that supplier will more or less know that something is wrong with their product. That supplier will then investigate & come up with an improvement so in my opinion, I can see that maybe in a year's time, the best LCD may be Samsung & not LG & then this cycle will just go on & on. Still remember the LCD issues with the LG for the 9300 screens, where the Samsungs were then the better ones? Furthermore, even LG has improved their LCDs recently with a version 2 screen!

I have the crappy philips drive and everytime i use it to read a disc it goes insane, like a mini-earthquake just hit my laptop.

I've had the laptop for more than 21days, is it still possible to get it replaced? It works ok-ish (it has a weird tendency to reset to pios mode only but that's easily fixed) but the noise is abhorrent @_@~

Contact Dell & see what they say... do note that getting the DVD burner replaced is a bit trickier. Good luck.

What is a version 2 LG screen? How can you tell?

I've been through "screen hell" trying to get a good LG screen for my M1710. Here's my sad story

a) Got my M1710 new with a Sharp screen. Field of view so narrow that the right and left side were dark when viewing the screen head on from the center. Very annoying when reading full screen material and having to tilt your head left and right just to get the screen bright.

b) Called Dell, got them to ship a new panel. I would put it in myself. They sent a Samsung (3155, I think it is, the better of the two Sammy's). It's better than the Sharp, but still way too much light falloff when you are not "dead center" on the screen. Just moving your head up and down or back and forth causes a curtain of darkness to move around the screen.

c) Called Dell, explained my unhappiness, and they worked hard to get me what I wanted...an LG screen. When it arrived, I put it in and soon discovered something was wrong. When the screen goes to sleep, it turns completely WHITE and also the brightness is fixed to full brightness all the time. Another forum member mentioned similar problems that turned out to be a bad inverter.

d) Called Dell again, explained the problem with this new LG and they said they'd send another, but policy forced them to send a tech this time to put it in.

e) Tech showed up, opened the box and said "Aren't we replacing the LCD panel" as we both stared into the box with a bezel for a Latitude D610. Someone input the wrong part number (one digit off) and I got a bezel instead of a panel!

f) Called Dell again, and the tech I've been working with (with the patience of a Saint!), said he would resend the correct panel (with a technician again to install it).

g) Tech showed up today, with LG panel in box. We installed it, and guess what? The same problem as the first LG--sleep mode = WHITE screen and no brightness adjustment. The LG's that Dell is sending as replacements MUST be incompatible, somehow, with the M1710. I certainly couldn't get two defective panels from Dell with the same defect!

h) Before the tech left, I had him reinstall the Samsung for now.

Now, I hear about a VERSION2 LG panel!! That must be the "golden ticket"! Somehow, though, I think they are only available in new systems...now I need to get Dell to send me a replacement system with a new LG Version 2 !!

Pray for me.

Two things...make sure your resolution is set to 1920x1200 and turn off large fonts by setting the font DPI back to 96.

I just got my system replacement's DVD drive replaced with an NEC. Very simple to do on tech chat, -requested specifically the NEC, and within minutes it was on my "Service status" order page with the NEC drive listed. That's the 2nd NEC I've requested. First was for my Philips (crappy) drive in my M1210, and now for the "whining" Sony drive in my M1710.

Here's a quick question for you guys. The Seagate 100GB 7200rpm drive in my replacement M1710 seems noticeably slower than the Hitachi 100GB 7200rpm in my original system. Is this normal? I ghosted the Hitachi to the Seagate, and can't help but notice the Seagate is just...well....slower.
