Which screen does your M1710 have? - Page 16

Stop B!tching

If you don't like what Dell has to offer then you should go build your own and stop b!tching about what parts are in the system.

keep it up guys. I am sure that Dell will put an end to your gayness. I bet that Dell will see that you are just abusing the system and put a stop to you. Why cry about every little thing. If you don't like the Dell system's then stop buying the damn things.

Personally I think the Seagate drive sucks. It's louder than the Hitachi and does seem slower. I'm just going to swap my current HD into the new system provided it has an LG screen with no dead pixels. If this system replacement doesn't work out for me then I'm just going to keep what I have and forget about it.

Just realised that my replacement M1710 has a slightly off centre 'designed for windows XP' sticker - it's also slightly loose on the top right corner, which i beieve is a problem with stickers made in Taiwan. I think the ones that are made in China are actually stickier, and the green part of the 'windows' image is possibly more bright.

Anyway, I'm in a foul mood right now as Dell refused to replace the machine. I have a right to demand perfection when I pay this amount of money for a laptop, so to all of you out there who are thinking of purchasing a Dell machine, don't - they suck. And their tech support is appalling - they didn't even ofer to replace the sticker either, and said it was 'within spec'.

I'm desperate for this to be fixed - in fact I can't think about anything else at all right now. I can't eat, spend all my time on the forums looking for advice from you guys, and think I may get ill real soon.

I just want what I paid for, is that too much to ask?

Well, I just tried to get them to replace the DVD drive and it seems like it's near impossible. I contacted the online chat at first , they told me that they can't give me something that's different from the one covered by warranty - e.g. a NEC drive, so I said fine I'll pay extra if you can get me a NEC, then they said I have to call customer support.

So I called customer support and it literally took them 20min for them to get me to the right XPS support department...(even though I dialed the xps support number that the online chat support gave me)

So after reviewing my problem and collecting my personal information (this is at least an hour after I first contacted them) they want to switch me *again* to some specific tech department. So I said ok, but after ~5min of waiting the phone comes up with a busy signal...I don't think I'm gonna go through more trouble just for a dvd drive -_-

the philips one *works* but god it's so incredibly loud... maybe i'll just order one myself from a third-party ~_~

Oh and my xps has the seagate drive, it doesn't seem to be loud at all (I can't really hear it unless it's really, really quiet). my friend has a gateway or sony or something, and he has the hitachi travelstar and it was louder than mine.

First was for my Philips (crappy) drive in my M1210, and now for the "whining" Sony drive in my M1710.

Woa, Philips DVD drive in M1210? I thought all the while Dell sent out the M1210 with only the Sony one.... except for one forum member who said he/she got a NEC in his/her M1210 from Dell... Interesting.

WilliamG, any tips on getting a DVD burner replaced? I tried once but that support tech insisted I obtained replacement software CD-ROMs from EA Sports & Microsoft!

No offense but what makes you think that building your own notebook through that site wouldn't give you the same problems that we faced? Ain't we "building" our own notebooks with Dell?

I fully understood your frustration & that's what I was warning you about in a previous post. I mean I installed the games software from EA Sports & even Microsoft Office Pro 2003 using other burners & they work successfully except my TSST drive (note that I used ORIGINAL software disks) & that support tech insisted that there is nothing wrong with the drive & that it is those CDs that are faulty & I should request the software vendors to request replacement CDs. I was like WTF. I mean those software are not the latest & it definitely comes out a lot longer than my drive was released & if the software is newer (release date) than my drive than maybe the CDs used must have been problematic as it can't be tested for compliance with the drive.... Furthermore, are companies like EA Sports or Microsoft small??? Shouldn't testing of the drives include reading of major software companies' disks???

It is normal that the Seagate is slower than the Hitachi, except if you use the Seagate drive as a "server." Only for that use will the Seagate be slightly faster than a Hitachi. I used both before & I think/feel that the Seagate is slightly quieter than the Hitachi but you'll have to note that the noise level that the drives make are still subject to each person's view/experience of using it. So my suggestion is to judge for yourself & maybe take whichever suits/pleases you most. Good luck.

You can probably tell the LG is a version 2 by maybe looking at the Dell web site using your service tag for new systems & maybe even looking at the actual product model number.

I think that since the LG version 2 is only recently found in new Dell E1705/M1710, you're probably not going to get one as your replacement. I believe the replacement you get depends mainly from the warehouse that sends out on what they currently have in their inventory. I think most of these replacements are refurbished & may even have been "recycled" before. I should know since I have good experience with it recently! My 1st replacement even have 3 red circled marker pen marks on the LCD! Wonder how it manages to pass the refurbished quality control test (or has it even been checked)??? I too have requested for different brands of LCDs to see whether it can solve my problem but all 5 replacement LCDs I recieved was the same Samsung model from the same warehouse! Not only that, during one of the replacement request, I was even scolded by the tech support guy for asking for a specific LCD. Note that I was kind enough not to argue with him & just let him ticked me off!

My opinion is that if it is possible to get a system replacement, then go for it... because that seems to be the best solution & if not, I really can't suggest what you should do..... cause with the replacements, I'll say there is an 80%+ chance that it will be worse than your current screen!!! (I learned this the hard way).

Does it actually show VERSION 2 or V2 or what are you seeing that identifies a Version 2 screen? Also, in device manager, for the display, does it still show LPL0000 or is the V2 screen a new ID?

I'm going to be talking with my XPS support guy today, so I want to be armed with as much info on the V2 thing as possible.

Thanks for any info!!

Just go to through to online chat and tell them your drive is making horrible noises, and you'd like to request the NEC drive. The tech will tell you it doesn't matter what you request, blah blah, -they'll send whatever is available in the factory. Just ask that they REQUEST it, and that will suffice. I got NECs both times I requested them. Got my M1710 NEC drive this morning.

I think it should still show LPL0000 in Windows (that is some kind of default profile for the LGs). I haven't seen a LG with another other listing in Windows so I guess this LPL0000 doesn't have too much meanings on it. Mind you, my E1705's LG WXGA+ matte screen also shows LPL0000 under Windows XP!

The LG is a V2 (I believe both the current new E1705 & M1710 are using the same LGs). I may be wrong but this is what you're looking for:

HH258LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 17, WU, VIDEO ELEC. STDS. ASSOC., GLARE WIDE VIEWING ANGLE, LG PHILIPS LCD, V2

Though I doubt you'll get that as a replacement. Anyway, good luck.
Thanks WilliamG, I'll be trying to request for it soon.
Ok, I just tried again with the chat support, and I lied saying that I called tech support and said that they (tech support) told me I should be able to request NEC drive.

But the online chat guy told me that even though I can request it, the chances that I'll get it is not that high because the warehouse send out whatever comparable drive they have.

But now at least I have a small chance of getting the NEC drive =)

For what it's worth, BF2 (an EA game) installed just fine using my TSST drive.

Why would you lie to tech support? Don't you think that they keep logs of every time you call or chat with them? I had a similar issue with my 700m LCD. It was never as bright after being replaced. I didn't notice until I bought a second one for my son. His looks much brighter than mine, but I guess there is really nothing that can be done. Dell uses different suppliers for parts and it's the luck of the draw.

Why don't you just swap out the hard drives before you send the original system back to dell? Wouldn't that solve your problem?
