And heck, I'm as anal as they come. Light leakage does diminish over time, in my experience. Keep the new screen.

Well technically both have stuck pixels since the new one has a faint blue one but its nowhere near as visible as the red stuck pixel. You're right though, the leakage isn't very visible even when watching dark movies.

It's near the top left corner, 16 mm from the left, 20 mm from the top. The red subpixel is dead, as opposed to stuck. I don't know what to do... I guess I'm just going to have to live with it - it's not right in the middle of the screen or anything and somehow I can't imagine Dell being too keen on replacing the notebook again because of a single bad pixel.

Regarding your dilemma, it's a tough one. The leakage on that second screen looks pretty bad, but then a stuck red pixel in the middle of the screen sounds pretty bad too. If you can live with the extra leakage then I suppose you should stick with screen #2.

C'mon, buddy...I've seen people swap systems 6, 7, 8, heck even 10 times, just to get a different screen! Does anyone remember the whole 'sparkles' fiasco when the TrueCrap(Tm) screens first came out? Whoooooaaaa, jump back baby! Now THAT was some FUN! Dudes just constantly getting screen/fullsystem replacements at the drop of a hat until Dell finally freaked out and disallowed this as a complaint, lol. I know several people who literally swapped screens/systems 4-5 times, and there was one dude who had 10 screen replacements, lol.

My point is, Jim, that Dell has a very liberal 30-day total-satisfaction guarantee...if you call them up within this period, I AM ALMOST CERTAIN you can get them to at LEAST send you a replacement LCD...FFS, man, if you're still within this time period, GO GETCHA A PERFECT 'PUTER! It's what you paid for! I mean, other companies make you pay ~$200 for a 'perfect screen guarrantee', but dell has their 30-day no-questions-asked swap-out period instead...it's there for you to take advantage...go and take advantage! Everyone else certainly is...look at Joker and WmG...they won't settle for anything short of perfection, and neither should you!

Edit: Even if you're past the 30-day exchange period, you may still be able to get a screen replacement under your warranty...tell them to just send the part, as the upgrade is very easily performed (as you know).

Isn't it 21 day satisfaction guarantee??? Or am I wrong???

21 day just in the US but I heard Canada and other places get 30 days. Hammer, I exchanged my system twice so I haven't really gone for perfection (yet) and more than likely I'm done and am gonna live with the light leakage of this new one.

Hammer, I don't believe the 21 or 30 day total satisfaction guarantee applies in the UK. I think we just get 7 days here and I am well past that. Also, the supervisor who set up my system exchange told me that they don't send out screens for DIY replacement in the UK. Still, I guess there would be no harm in calling customer care and seeing what they say.

I've also noticed, compared to my Gen. 2 LCD, that the pixel grid is more obvious on the M1710 LG screen. It has a kind of "pixelly" look to it. I'm probably one of very few people who'll notice it, since many of you never had a Gen.2 prior to getting an M1710. I really notice the screen difference playing World of Warcraft. That said, this new LG is much brighter, as Dell advertises, than the old Gen.2 screen.

Hallo boys!

I'm new in this forum and i post from italy.

I've a XPS M1710 (since one week) and its monitor is a SEC3155. In my opinion it's a very good monitor and i don't see any dark side. In nvidea control panel i chosen:

52% lighting
15% digital brighting
41% contrast
19% improve imagine
5% gamma

What do you think about these numbers?

I had the Samsung SEC3155 in my first M1710 and it was pretty good apart from the uneven backlighting.

I assume "19% improve imagine" is the sharpness control? I would definitely leave that at zero, it basically destroys the picture. It tries to make things look sharper by increasing local contrast near edges, which results in an ugly haloing effect.

I called Dell and they said they would not do a replacement unless there were "more than five" bad pixels.

Yes, it's the sharpness control. I'll try to leave it at zero %.

Thanks.

Almost all computer company's do that. The only two that don't, is: Apple, and Northwest Falcon. If you go to Falcon, go to there support page and then read the warranty.

Yeah, I know all about dead pixel policies, but I hoped Dell might help me out given the very short time I've had the notebook. Well, it seems like I'm stuck with the dead pixel, so I called Dell to ask if I could swap my whiney Sony drive for the NEC, and the guy said yes, no problem at all. It should be with me on Monday. I assume the NEC drive is the ND-6750A, right folks?
Isn't Dell still using the ND-6650A??? Or am I wrong???

Hmmm, is there much of a difference anyway? Looking at the specs, they seem to be about the same. In fact the access times of the 6650 appear to be better than the 6750!
I think the ND-6750A has write support for DVD-RAM or something...

I don't think so... there isn't even any mention of DVD-RAM support at all in the product sheet. The ND-6750A web page says it uses less power than its predecessor, but I'll gladly take the faster access time of the ND-6650A.

Am I the only one who has an M1710 where the bottom left and right corners of the screen are VERY dark...just the corners? It almost looks like they are "pinched". This is best seen by auto-hiding the taskbar and setting the background to a solid color. I don't mind much, since the taskbar is usually there and hides this defect well enough that it does not bother me. If I was one of those people who put their taskbar along the edge or top of the desktop, it might bother me more.

No, they are all like that. At least the ones with Samsung and LG-Philips screens are. It's something I gladly ignore considering the other problems that exist with these notebook LCDs.
OK, cool. Thanks for the reply. I just wanted to make sure. I dread the thought of EVER having my display replaced. it seems like the replacement LCD's ALWAYS have more problems than the original. My screen would have to be showing some really bad problems for me to ever consider having it replaced. I had the display on my Inspiron 700m replaced and now it is so much darker than the original. I even bought a new one for my son and could not believe the difference between the brightness of his compared to mine. Never again will I complain about a "non-issue" because I may get a replacement that has real issues...which is what has happened to a few people on this message board.
