Which screen does your M1710 have? - Page 4

Ok now do i hear a samsung from texas?
The thread here I think is intended to discover whether specifically UK M1710 users have a choice of screens for their unit, as well as trying to work out why Dell are currently replacing defective M1710 screens with inferior units.

There are plenty of threads that discuss the relevant merits of different brands - this thread was set up by Jim to answer a specific and probably UK-centric issue he was having with his screen. So the real benefit here would be for Uk users to post of their experiences.

For the record I have a Samsung, it's better than my M170 samsung screen, but the light leakage is pretty bad. The colour and brightness of the screen however, is better.

xeronex- do you have an M1710, or another type of Inspiron?

The light leakage is apparent but not intolerable, the two bottom corners are noticeably darker but again not so much that it warrants my time and effort to seek a replacement. Brightness is pretty high and even with no discoloration anywhere (no dead pix either) so I guess it's pretty decent, although I've seen some LG ones and they do look admittingly better.

100% spot on, wadham, thanks for making it crystal clear. I spoke to my tech support contact again and he said he was escalating the issue to his manager. Hopefully I will get to speak to the manager later today and clear up this obvious error in Dell's stock control.

I have to say, the black level of the Samsung LTN170WU is absolute rubbish. When I set the background of my girlfriend's Sony Vaio to black it looks, well, black. If I do the same thing with my Dell's SEC5557 it looks anything but black, in fact it looks totally bleached out. Playing a game with dark scenes such as Quake is sort of like looking though net curtains. Total pants.

The title of this thread certainly does not support the idea that he was interested in only UK-based M1710's, nor does any of the content of the original message. Instead, the title seems to invite others to comment on what screen they have in their M1710's, and since Jim was having quality issues, it seems natural that others would start discussing the pros and cons of their models. That seems to be direction this thread has gone. I'd suggest a new thread explicitly directed to UK M1710 users if you (and Jim) aren't interested in how this thread is going. Personally, I have gotten some very useful information with regards to panel models, etc., that is helping me ensure I get the best panel for my M1710. Thanks to everyone who has contributed.

I read over the first half dozen posts or so and the don't even mention the UK. So if this is supposed to be a UK only thread then it got jacked at some point because nothing in the beginning says that. And if the UKers get to know about a great screen we have here across the pond that is good to know. Hope that you can get it from dell spare parts somehow.

Dudes, hahah, I thought Jim's original question was pretty clear - Dell have different suppliers for different areas, and much of the talk that has been mentioned in this thread, whilst being very valid, has been discussed in many other display related threads.

I think that all that matters here is that Jim finally gets closure to his original question and whilst the posts from the guys abroad were not helping him directly, but I'm sure they are appreciated just the same.

Basically I think we can discount all the sharp and lg owners as there probably aren't any in the UK (only xeronex, who hasn't specified his model) - it seems us Brits are stuck with the samsung screen for the time being, and I'm getting jealous hearing of all thiese pristine LG and Sharp screens the rest of you peeps have across the pond - only we have no option to get them..it seemed pretty obvious to me that Jim would prefer to hear from other UK 1710 owners, as our parts list is different to those abroad.

Not to beat a dead horse, wadham, but i've read and reread Jim's original question, and I don't see anywhere that he discusses anything about different suppliers in different areas. That may have been the intention later in the message thread, but the original question was that he received a different brand/model for his replacement panel, and he wanted to "know the story".

Given the sheer number of messages in this thread discussing the different panels in the M1710, i'd have to assume no one else got the idea that he only wanted to hear about UK people.

Anyways... enuff said. I think this thread has served it's purpose for those of us not in the UK.

Well I got the 1710 in the UK. It is a samsung. Now not being used to bright glossy lcd's on a laptop I was kinda worried that I had a lot of light leakage.....but then saw examples on this site.

However it wasn't washing out any of the colors at the bottom taskbar or anything. I have to say that after a month it has decreased quite a bit and do not notice it as much. I am quite happy with my screen now.

OK folks, calm down. It's true that I am interested to know what screens the M1710 comes with in all areas of the world. But wadham is also totally correct in saying that the reason I started this thread was to verify that Dell had replaced my screen with the wrong type of panel, and to obtain the information I needed to challenge Dell on the matter.

My Dell tech support contact has escalated the issue to his supervisor, who was supposed to call me back today. Unfortunately that didn't happen, but the tech support guy (who is an absolute star, by the way) called me to apologise for his supervisor being too busy to call me today, and to assure me that I would definitely get a call on Monday.

Interesting that xeronex has a M1710 with a Sharp panel (as stated here), apparently disproving the theory that only the Samsung screen is used in UK versions of the M1710.

My main gripe with this screen is the "Grain or Sparkle" effect it has on all white / light colour backgrounds, i find it particularly dissapointing. Yes i have some light leakage also at the bottom of the screen which i can probably live with, but then i also think why should i have to, on a notebook of this price.

I am particularly interested to see how u guys get on with your screen changes, i am tempted to ring dell and at least try one swap out and see if there is any improvement.

Uk 1710 here with the LPL (LG?) Panel. Bottom corners are darker but not to the point that it bothers me. Overall, nice dark blacks and vivid colors, no dead pixels.
Do the LG panels suffer with the "Grainy" effect on white / light colour screens?
So, there is a UK user with a Sharp panel and another with an LG - seems like Dell may have been telling me little porkies..

Will be on the phone to them tomorrow about this, as well as explaining to them that the gesture of goodwill they sent me, an xps backpack, urned up on Thursday - a 15.4" laptop case. Nice one Dell - no matter how hard I try my M1710 just won't seem to fit..

Having watched a few dvd's on my unit now, I have decided that my samsung panel is not of suitable quality - the leakage s far too obvious for comfort both at the top and bottom of the screen.

I am not sure eactly what this sparkly effect looks like but the whites look really white here compared to my 2 year old alienware 16".

I would be interested to hear what Dell have to say re availability of others screens in the UK apart from the samsung also.
I understand that this thread is re M1710 screens. I think this is relevant though.
I live in UK and currently have 2x Inspiron 9400, 1 of which has the SEC5557 screen and the other LPL0000. The LG screen came on my newest one.

That is interesting, because the paperwork shown to me by the service engineer said the screen was a 9400/M1710 replacement.
Though in Germany not the UK, I have a substandard Samsung screen on my 1710 bought in May. The Dell rep and the tech here said that the LG screens are not available in Germany. So it looks like the principle of no screen choice is being preached here too.

I posted shots of my screen in this thread.

Interestingly, linux reports my screen as being a Seiko

By the way RedTed, how would you say the LG-Philips compares to the Samsung?
