Which screen does your M1710 have? - Page 5

Hi Jim.
The LG screen seems to have better colour depth, no light bleed (black is black), and strangely enough it seems brighter too.
I could see no sparkle effect on either screen.
On the Samsung at times colours can seem slightly washed-out, but saying this my girlfriend struggles to see much difference.
The Samsung looks better than the LG from an extreme angle - On the LG blue seems to show with a green tint.
Having both screens here side by side, all things considered, the LG screen is without doubt superior when viewing from a 'normal' angle range.
If I had the chance to replace my Samsung screen with another LG I would do it in an instant.
Hope this helps, and fingers crossed for your replacement.

Well, my original problem is now solved. I have taken out my Samsung WUXGA and replaced it with an LG WXGA+ Matte screen.

Zero reflection. minimal leakage. easy to read. Looks like a computer scren and not a mirror etc etc.

A friend from this board supplied the screen and I accomplished in 2 days what Dell couldn't manage in 4 months after 9 screen replacements and even a system swap. I'm keeping the WUXGA though as a spare, just in case!

RedTed, the LG-Philips should be slightly brighter as it is rated at 190 nits compared to 185 nits for the Samsung LTN170WU.

wadham, that sounds great, I think I would prefer matte too, though I'd like to stay with WUXGA resolution. I'm still waiting for my call back from a Dell tech support supervisor. I wonder whether your friend can sort me out with a decent screen as well. I don't really want to have to fork out any more dosh but if Dell won't give me a proper screen then maybe that's what I'll have to do.

Well, we did a swap - his WXGA+ for my spare M170 WUXGA acreen, so I doubt he'd have any more, unfortunately.

Trying to get this screen from Dell directly was a nightmare - refer to my first post in this thread! It ended up costing both me and Dell, even though I was trying continually to go for the easiest option - in the end the situation escalated to where Dell offered the replacement machine - not once did I ask for it - I was in fact very happy with my M170.

Ah, OK, I see. I was missing the part about you having a spare screen. How did that happen?

I've finally spoken to a supervisor, who was very helpful and even looked up the Samsung panels on the web as we were speaking. He seemed to have no difficulty understanding what I was saying about the difference in brightness between the Samsung LTN170WU and LTN170U1, and how the M1710 should have the brighter of the two panels. He said he would try to find out what is going on and get back to me.

Nice one Jim - I always found the Dell techs to be extremely knowledgable and very helpful and everytime I was pretty much guaranteed the correct part number, only for it to be 'changed' somewhere further down the line.
At one point I even had a supervisor's manager making physical notes on the correspondence to the warehouse to ensure the correct part got sent out, to no avail.

I almost felt that there was someone in the warehouse going 'he's got an M170, why does he want an inferior panel? I'll give him a WUXGA, and I bet he'll thank me for it..'

Dell techs and customer service folks have been excellent, only the results have been usually way off - like the 'goodwill gesture of an XPS backpack' - what turns up? a 15.4" laptop carry case, which I have now been told to 'put on ebay' by the Dell guys...heheh.

So, what to say on the help line, what kind (number) of screen I wanna get? I know that's LPL... or SEC... but they don't know it until it's connected to the system. Any serial # or series? I'm based in Ireland.

I just had my E1705 which had the crappy Samsung screen replaced and they did send me another E1705 with the LPL0000 screen which is 1000 times better looking than any of the Samsung screens. No more light leakage and no grainy sparkle effect like on the Samsung screens. This screen isn't perfect but it's the best I Have seen from Dell so far. I think the Sony, HP and Toshiba screens still blow it out of the water but it's a big improvement from what I had and for the price I will keep the Dell for now.

E1705, 7900GS, LG LPL0000 screen, Hitachi 100gb 7200rpm HD, 2 gig of 667mhz DDR2 ram, Soundblaster upgrade, bluetooth etc...

(and that includes several desktops LCD's)
I agree! From all the Dell Screens the LPL00000 looks to be to be the best compared to what else Dell has to offer. Pictures look slick and no dark spots

I called Dell again today and was told that my issue has been escalated, and that they are still waiting for an answer from up on high. I'm getting a bit fed up now - I think I'll give it until the end of the week then I'll make the "suggestion" that they replace the entire machine. I've tried to get on with the SEC5557 but it's simply not acceptable. The black level is absolutely awful - for movies and games with dark scenes it's kind of like looking through fog or net curtains.

No comparison. The LG is 100 times better than the Samsung screen.
I had both and the Samsung is a piece of crap. The gaininess and sparkle effect are unbearable. Video's appeared Dull and lifeless. The LG brings it to life and it looks a lot better without any dark spots, sparkles or dullness.
They are like day and night. I still say the Sony and Toshiba screens are years ahead of Dell's technology but at this time I think the LG is the best screen that Dell has.

Interesting thread.
Jim,,good luck with getting your screen replaced.
I hope DeLL does the right thing and replace it for you.

I had a similar incident about 3 years ago with my
DeLL i8500 laptop.
The Samsung screen suffered from severe burn in.
They did eventually replace it, but I had to be persistant.

I checked mine on my M1710 and have the LG screen.
That's good to know.!

Good Luck!!

I was always pro LG, especially when I saw my friends M170 which had a samsung which looked like crap, and I was worried when dell was replacing my XPS gen 2 with a M1710, but when it came it had the LG, in the system config it shows:

HH258LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 17, WU, VIDEO ELEC. STDS. ASSOC., GLARE WIDE VIEWING ANGLE, LG PHILIPS LCD, V2

not sure what the V2 is, but its quite a bit brighter than my XPS gen 2's screen is, no light leakage (compared to the very slight on my XPS gen 2's LG), and better viewing angles/response time, and better colors! All in all, a very awesome LCD.

I will be changing the screen the 2nd time, but Dell inform me there is no LG to replace..... I don't might getting the samsung, but the screen the brough for exchang is really a piece crab.... Just call Dell the 5th attemp..... You guys are right, I got hangup 2 time in 5 phone calls.
The tech arrive today to replace the screen. Again, nothing has been done. Dell has send me a K9897 part LG screen, but it is a wuxga none truelife screen. So the tech did not bother to chang and just call Dell again for replacement. This is after 5 phone calls with 3 hours of time I spent explain again and again with different Dell techs..... tired...

I have a 2 years old HP ZD7000 lappy. Although it is a 1680X1050 screen, but the quality is much better than Dell's. If Dell hasn't offer advance video card, I don't think I would ever buy another Dell lappy. Now, I am looking at Toshiba's P105 with 7900GTX and # keypads. I probably give this damn lappy to my cousin and buy a Toshiba for myself. I already check the screen on Toshiba, they are really nice. I have a regular job, and I really don't have time anf energy t play this game on exchange parts...

Hi another SHP13C1 user. I wonder how this sharp screen fairs against the LG and Samsung, I have only two gripes about it, in the middle on the bottom of the screen I can notice a very, very slight amount of light leakage only noticable on a pure black background. Also you have to almost be looking directly at the monitor or it looks kind of crappy. It doesnt seem very bright to me compared the the LG panel in my Toshiba notebook. Does any one know the specs for this panel?

Have been on the phone again today to the Dell supervisor. He says he having trouble getting answers but hopes to have some info for me tomorrow. He said he found out that the Samsung LTN170WU is being supplied as the standard replacement screen for the M1710 thoughout Europe and Scandinavia. Reading between the lines, I wonder whether Dell have been getting complaints about the uneven backlighting in the new screens and have reverted to the old model, which is more evenly lit but inferior in every other way.

Does anyone have this screen for their M1710:

1 JH291 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 17, WU, VIDEO ELEC. STDS. ASSOC., GLARE WIDE VIEWING ANGLE, SHARP, V2

If so how is it?
