Windows Vista Aero Working on an e1405

I have been just a reader on this forum for a while, but I thought that now would be a good time to post. My son (our first! ) was born last night, and to fill the time I installed Windows Vista (over 1 hour just to install). After pouring over this forum and others, I have finally got the "Windows Vista Aero Experience" working on my e1405.

The biggest issue was the GMA950 but I finally found the resolution. For all of you that are interested, you have to install the Intel Lakeport WDDM driver. So how do you do this? Well, the driver is included with Vista Beta 2 (build 5384), but it doesn't install automatically. To install it (these instructions only work with GMA950),
  1. Open device manager
  2. Right click your display adapter
  3. Click "Update Driver Software..."
  4. "Browse my computer for driver software"
  5. "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
  6. Uncheck "Show compatible hardware"
  7. Make sure "Intel Corporation" is selected under the manufacturer list
  8. Select "Intel(R) Lakeport Graphics Controller 0 (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM)"
  9. Finish the installation
  10. Restart the computer
  11. If Aero is not running, select it from appearance settings

That should do it. It worked for me first time.

The only other things that I have found that don't work are the Dell Wireless Utility, and Dell Quickset. I am running Office 2007 that I have been using with XP for the last little while and that runs well. I haven't done a thorough testing yet, but I will. I am going to be installing Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Premiere, as well as some others. I will let you all know how that goes.

Congrats on the new addition to your family!

Thanks for sharing your tips on Vista as well. I have no intention to install it but I'm sure others will appreciate it.

Rep for you.

yea, i have every intention to uninstall it. everything seems slow on my i6000. took four times to connect to a network, along with 4 freezes.

So if I buy a E1405 right now, it will have no problems handling Vista when the first real release of the OS comes out? That is, it will be able to support all of Vista's features?

I'm specifically concerned how the integrated graphics chip (Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950) will be able to handle Aero, Microsoft's new graphical user interface in Windows Vista.

Darksaber: yes, the E1405 will be able to run WinVista with Aero.

This has never been a debate from what I understand. The question is how well.

When you have a lot of windows open and what not, will it choke?

Now that it's in public beta maybe that question can be answered.

doesn't beta 2 significantly drain the battery life??

and you found the time/desire to figure out how to install vista aero while your first child was being born?????

Well, only during my wife's labor. She was sleeping through it anyways. Epidurals are a beautiful thing apparently.

As far as Aero on the e1405, it took some jumping through hoops to get it to work, but it works well. At first it wouldn't work, and I talked to Dell support and they told me over and over that I would need 2gb RAM, but on their website it says that the e1405 only need 1gb for Aero to work. So that lead me all over the internet until I found the solution above.

As far as a lot of windows open, I will test that and let you know. So far it seems to be working well...

Battery life does suck compared to XP, but I will let you know after more testing. With Aero enabled and the screen at full brightness the battery meter says 2 hr 30min just after a full charge.

The only things that I don't have working are the 3D alt+tab, and Sleep (or Stand by) mode. Alt+tab is different than the basic Vista theme, but not the cool 3D effect. If anyone know how to turn that on or off, let me know.

When the computer wakes up after Sleep, I can move the mouse, but that is it. Windows tells me that the video and audio drivers are the problem here. I believe that the issue is that the new Sleep mode is different than the old Stand By mode in XP, and these driver don't like it. So we'll have to wait for updates...

To use the 3D tab you need to hit the Windows Key and the tab key not Alt-tab.

I installed Vista on my E1505 over the weekend and wasn't very impressed. I've always looked forward to new releases of Windows but after playing around with it I just didn't feel there are any compelling reasons to upgrade when it is finally released from a functional point of view. The eye candy is nice but it is just that... eye candy.

The installation process takes way too long and the size of the installation is rediculous.

How much Hard Drive space does the full install take up? Will it sit comftrably in a 12gb partition?

All by its self, maybe. If you plan on installing any other programs on it, you will need more. About all I have installed is Office 2007 Beta and I am using about 16GB.
