How big is too big

Well i'm about to get a laptop for college I have been looking around and I will probably get a macbook (black one) or something with TX2(leaning toward TX2 at this time). Well I saw a 15.4" widescreen macbook pro in store it seemed a little too big to me. I i really don't like the 12.1" screens either it seems a little to small to me. is the 15.4" widescreen really too big or is it just me? what could be some other screen sizes? if you would like to leave a laptop suggestion please do so. Thanx

i know that already, that's why i'm not getting a 17' laptop

14" should do the trick then. See if you can take a look at some HP dv1000 at local stores, those are pretty popular (you'll find them in any store) and they're 14". If thats your choice, I suggest going for the Dell E1405 if you're in a budget (you can get one of those for about $800), if you want more power check out Asus W3j and a8j

they make laptops that weigh 20 pounds. But I guess those are called desktop replacement, or tanks.

then look into 15.4 and 14.1 lappys aswell as the 12.1's if you can deal with the smaller size.

I second Filippo's recommendations. My preference would be Asus W3J, Asus A8J, HP dv1000, Compaq 2000, Dell E1405.

Also, remember that nothing is better than looking at each other on the real world, specially when it comes to screen.

@usapatriot: he said 12" seems too small.

I also agree with Filippo's recommendations. 14" systems are the most well-rounded form factor, being much more portable than a 15.4", while having the same capabilities.

the laptop i got was also for university. i wanted to go as small as possible, was looking at the 700m (12inch), however i noticed, you could not customise the compoenents as good as a 14.1 inch lappy, so yea, i reckon the 14.1 inch is perfect....... well for me it is, as the monitors i have ever used are 17 inch...... any bigger IMO is too big for computer applications

I think it also depends are your size. I'm small and fairly short, and like my 700m fairly well. The only issue is that the period key and a few others are extra small, a pain when I'm programming/typing papers. As a generic suggestion I'd say 13.3, maybe 14.1 is a sweet spot for portability and ease of use (IMO). You still get the small form factor with a much more generous keyboard layout.

How big you are has a lot to do with it...

a 17" notebook to most ppl is gigantic, but to someone as tall as Shaq, it might be like an ultraportable...

I'd say 14.1" is perfect for most people (even though I still prefer the tiny laptops)

There is no too big or too small; it all depends on your size, strength, and desired use. If the 15.4" looks big, then don't get it.

(However, it's not too bad. My g/f (5' 3" and thin) and I (5' 7" and scrawny) both have 15.4" machines that we haul everywhere -- airplanes, in backpacks, etc. I'd not dismiss 15.4" machines out of hand until you're sure they're too big for you.)

this was my first ntoebook pruchase, and at first i wanted a 12inch for protabiity, but u could not custiomized it as good, but since this is for university purpose, i think i will stick to 14.1 inch, as the ekyboard is the standard size minus the kaypad. and this si eprfect, i am type very efficiently with this keyboard, as it is the standard size.... 14.1 " for me

I like the 13.3 inch screens better than the 14.1 inchers. You should look at the Macbook(cause you were interested in mac) or the Sony SZ series notebook(dedicated graphics).

If you can't swim with it, it is way too big! I mean, really, everyone knows this....

Just kidding... I would go for the macbook... you are smart. Not only will you be able to have windows, but you will be able to use the mac os as well.

I use both windows and apple OSs. I love both of them... (please, lets not start an argument)... anyway, being able to use both on one computer is a major advantage for someone going to school. Use apple, then, if you ever need windows, it is there....

For me I really enjoyed the 15.4" notebooks. They packed some power for gaming in terms of GPU (which is really hard to find on the < 14") while being small enough to carry around to classes. To me a 17" is the max I'd go with, bigger then that and I'd just go the desktop route again.
