I have the Orinoco Gold card B/G card with the External jack for for 80 bucks at newegg.com. all you need is B/G, nobody uses A, plus a new standerd is coming out next year. 802.11 I So, you'll have to have more than one card in the future.

Used the Engenius... not really that impressed, and had some issues with Linux at the time.

There's another 200mW card out there that has me curious though.

Orinoco cards are 50mW, at least mine is

So far, so good with this thing... I've been getting great reception out of this thing without any external help... should be interesting to see what the 15.5 dBi antenna does for it.

Hey when you say you have an Engenius card are you talking about this one:

This says Soekris on it. Is this the one you are talking about. I am going to get this one if someone can tell me what chipset it uses inside. I would like to use netstumbler with this and it won't work with just any card. Only cards with the prism chipset will work. See this list of cards that WILL work below. Does anyone know what chipset this card (Engenius Soekris) uses?

Oh damn I just noticed that this card (Almost all their products are dot 11 b) is 802.11b only. I want b/g. I must have g and preferably both b and g. I still am wondering what chipset it uses. I am going to email them and ask. I will post results here.

List of Cards that work with NETSTUMBLER 0.3.23

Lucent Technologies WaveLAN/IEEE (Agere ORiNOCO)
Dell TrueMobile 1150 Series (PCMCIA and mini-PCI)
Avaya Wireless PC Card
Toshiba Wireless LAN Card (PCMCIA and built-in)
Compaq WL110
Cabletron/Enterasys Roamabout
Elsa Airlancer MC-11
ARtem ComCard 11Mbps
IBM High Rate Wireless LAN PC Card
1stWave 1ST-PC-DSS11IS, DSS11IG, DSS11ES, DSS11EG

these guys @ edigitalwireless.com are pretty good and seem to have the best pricing on wireless gear.

I started to go the Orinoco route and couldnt surf in my back yard.(Because of the power) I picked up the engenius cd2511 and it got me goin and now i can surf halfway down my block!! They even have one that has two external MMCX connectors to allow to increase range.

They are the AW of WIFi cards.

I want to know if anyone thinks this mini PCI wireless card will fit inside the Area-51m. I would like to replace the internal card. Someone (I think booga) posted a picture of a USRobotics mini pci card that he stuck in his laptop. I would like to stuff this one in there:

802.11i (new wireless standard)

Here is a blurb from wifi planet:

http://www.wi-fiplanet.com/columns/article.php/3295031

As of now, 802.11i is still winding its way through the cumbersome IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) ratification process, although some vendors claim to have 802.11i equipment already available. Without 802.11i being standardized, though, there's no way to know whether or not this gear will comply completely with the eventual ratified version.

This standard will be backwards compatible with 802.11a/b/g. It uses WPA instead of WEP. Interesting article.

Thanks for mentioning 802.11i. I didn't know a new standard was being developed.

yeah, we've all been waiting for that since about May'ish...

Interesingly, Netstumbler seems to have an issue with the newer Orinoco cards... probably because the chipset is actually by Atheros now, instead of Agere. That said, I believe a simple change in registry will fix the issue.
