no wireless

Hello,

I've got the M5116 laptop. When I try to get the wireless connection offered on GNER trains - the only time I would lie to use wireless - the laptop simply does not pick up the connection. It tells me there is no wireless network in the vicinity.

I'm running both Windows XP and Suse Linux 10 on the laptop and neither will work.

Any ideas what I may be missing?

have u talked to the train personel? they should have a start-up guide or something similiar to get ur laptop up & running.
check ur wzc (control panel-admin-services-WirelessZeroConf..) service, night want to let this ms baby handle ur signal checking.
could we get more from ur current setup? dhcp, etc ....

cheers ...

The start up guide on the train simply says a laptop should automatically detect the network. I wouldn't know what settings to adjust etc on my laptop. I've never found a simple guide that explains how to configure a wireless connection.

righto - let us try to make sure that the standard wireless service on laptop's side is functioning correctly. i m not good at doodling instruction but uncle bill is :-)

i recommend creating a new connection (stick with the wizard or http://compnetworking.about.com/od/w...vpnconnect.htm) as to not get ur current setup confused, and DHCP,DHCP ... dynamic IP address and NO encryption - these are pretty much the minimum to pay attention to when roaming with open wifi services, keep ur firewall and virus software uptodate :-)

cheers ...

Thanks - I've been away from home all week and just about to go off without my laptop for a fortnight. I'll give this a try when I get back in July.
