M1210 Heating Issues

Having all things considered, this is issue that scares the most. Core Duo 2.16ghz + 256MB Video + 2GB RAM=lots of heat

How long does it take to overheat, and how hot does it get? I'm actually considering ditching the video card as a specification option...

ram makes next to no heat

Mine's only 1.83ghz and 1gb of RAM, but with ~78f ambient, I ran Americas Army for over an hour and the fan never even kicked on to high. i8kfangui showed max temps of 71c for the CPU which is pretty toasty in my opinion... I'm not sure exactly what temperature the Intel chips start to downclock themselves at, and couldn't find the info with a quick Google, but I did see people reporting temps as high as 90c with no serious problems.

What makes more heat, processor or vid card? I'm thinking of ditching the video card.

Does the laptop overheat to the point of it being uncomfortable to your hands or lap?

Not that I've found yet, at least under normal use. With heavy use or gaming, it got warmer then I would want to keep on my lap. Of course, I'd never actually game with it on my lap anyway...

How hot does it get to the hands?

Is running Photoshop CS2, Flash MX 2004, Dreamweaver MX 2004, and ImageReady CS2, along with a couple tabs of firefox and iTunes, considered "heavy use"?

Fairly warm.

And you run all that with the trackpad??? That would drive me insane! I hate trying to use any of those without my external mouse... I've never tried those with it on my lap. I'd think that it isn't very heavy use, even though it'd suck up a ton of RAM they are not heavy on the CPU except in individual bursts.

Not the trackpad, I'd use an external mouse. When I say hands, don't you need to keep your hands on the chassis when typing? 2GB is sufficient for running those programs, correct?
Running those programs isn't going to get it running hot, idle my CPU runs around 28c in windows I never see it go over 50c.. gaming it will get a bit hotter though. As for the video card it seems to idle pretty high but doesn't really get hot on the bottom unless you do some intense gaming for awhile. I have gamed a bit while its on my lap, it does get warm and in Hawaii where its already hot it can get uncomfortable just because it makes me hot.. but not really burn my legs off hot.

Hmmm... I think I might opt out on the video card. Will the integrated run Vista, and perhaps a little video editing smoothly?

Gah, this made me think there was a heating issue with it.. lol..just someone concerned..
Gah, your computer is going to cost an arm and a leg with the specs you have listed so far..I hope you get some coupons..

Oh, sorry, I thought you meant hands on the bottom of the laptop. I was wondering why you'd hold your hands down there. And yeah, 2gb should be good for those.

The GMA950 will run Vista Aero. It's the same card that's in the E1405 that someone recently posted a review on this board about running Vista with Aero on.

Can it run it smoothly, is the real question.

Just judging from my limited experience with the current beta, I seriously doubt the integrated chip could run Aero well. You could run Vista in the low-detal / non-3D mode fine, but Aero would skip too much, which might make it undesirable for video and image editing.

Video editing is 2D. I don't think your graphics card will make much difference.

It's only really in CAD and 3D rendering that it will. Video is more about your processor speed.

Exactly. If the things you cited are the only things you're going to be doing (Photoshop, Dreamweaver, etc.), then there's no reason to opt for the higher video card. If you upgrade to Vista you'll have to forgoe the prettyness, but that just gets in the way after awhile anyways.

Can anyone confirm this?

wow, so the 1210 will not run windows Vista well, or is this a certain program?
Well, right now Vista is still in its beta stage.
Mostly because not all drivers are available for it.

I'm going to grab the costco one soon. ALMOST grabbed a 1.83/1GB RAM/100 HD with AV and the geforce card and such for 1350 but someone outbid me in the last 3 seconds and won with 1375. Damn shame.

I'm just saying there's probably not going to be any more deals anyway.

It's the Aero program that people are worried about. That is if you are running the computer without a seperate video card.
