I said Vista with Aero enabled. It will run, but the mouse may skip slightly (noticable when doing image editing and other precision tasks, not too much otherwise), and window moving/minimizing will be slowed by horribly sluggish animations. The new Alt-tabbing won't be happy either. Vista has a degree of trouble with my secondary desktop's 9600 Pro and Aero, so I don't predict it will be very happy with a dopey Intel chip. It works fairly well with my 9800 Pro, though. Disable the graphical glitter, and it works perfectly fine regardless. Edit: "Aero" is the GUI with its three-dimensional prettyness. You can, as I said, reduce it to looking pretty much like XP with a new theme, though (or Win 98/2K style). That will work fine.

And is it easy to turn off Aero? I don't really buy into this 3D window crap... there's no point to it really.

I actually couldn't find the switch in the beta, but I wasn't looking very hard at all, since I didn't want it off. From everything that Microsoft has said, in the final Vista it's going to be very easy to switch off. All Aero adds is the glassy transparent effect, animations for maximizing/minimizing/appearing Windows, and a live preview of windows when alt-tabbing. Not necessary in the slightest.

Good. It's easy to switch off, and it isn't necessary... I think Aero has more cons than benefits, but whatever.

As for the video card it seems to idle pretty high but doesn't really get hot on the bottom unless you do some intense gaming for awhile. I have gamed a bit while its on my lap, it does get warm and in Hawaii where its already hot it can get uncomfortable just because it makes me hot.. but not really burn my legs off hot.
So on idle (or with the programs I listed), no matter how long you use it (say 16 hours straight), it won't exceed what... 28C? That's already 80F... won't that be uncomfortable to the hands as you type?

That's just the temperature of the CPU itself. The computer's surface doesn't feel like that. 28C seems pretty good; my desktop PCs all sit around 55C, with one going into the 60s under load.

Oh, I see... what does the computer's surface feel like in the following condition: Working all the programs I listed after 10+ hours

Sorry for being so specific

that kinda sucks that Microsoft can't optimize Aero to work on dedicated graphics cards when OSX Tiger runs just fine on Macs with much slower processors and integrated graphics.

The computer really doesn't have heat radiating out of the keyboard, so it feels perfectly normal.. unless your left handed and you have a mouse on the left side where the heat vents I don't think you will have a problem.

I can but agree with you... but I think Vista is slightly more advanced, visually-wise.

Oh... so it doesn't feel externally uncomfortable. Well, I'm waiting on Vista and Merom... so let's see how fast integrated graphics develop.

Not really. It has the annoying glass shader effect, which might contribute to the slowness, but there's not much else. You should see the similiar XGL/compiz on Linux. That thing runs incredibly smoothly, and actually has added functionality (you can smoothy zoom in/out anywhere; virtual desktops are placed on a cube and windows can be slid along the cube from side-to-side; etc.). It runs incredibly quickly, even on hardware which can barely handle Aero. There's a video here. Just imagine that, but at the resolution of your choice and running perfectly smoothly. I've installed it, quite spiffy. Microsoft just sucks at 3d desktops
