I would think any DVD player you'd care to use would do the job, but I seem to recall a few complaints about it.
I never found MCE itself to be very appealing. If you don't have a PowerDVD CD (or if you do and don't care for it and its odd interface), VLC media player is a free download, and has full DVD playback.

isnt there a free version of PowerDVD anyways?

i looked for one myself when i did a quick reformat on my 9300. sadly, i couldnt find one outside a 60day free trial, and all the other dvd players i searched for (on sites like cNet, etc) were either trial versions, buggy, clunky, sketchy, or downright installed malware on my PC. VLC does everything i want and more. I have found it gives better video quality than wmp 10 as well!. just a heads up though, the biggest problem with it is that it has no "dvd controls" when its full screen readily available.

there are hotkeys premapped (space for pause, etc) but they arnt documented and you have to experiment until u figure em all out. besides that, its great

Or you could simply go into Preferences -> Settings -> Interface -> HotKey Settings and check the box for Advanced Settings.

This will show you what they currently are and/or allow you to change them.

Did I say simply? lol

wait, so u can't use the optical drive at all (burn dvd's, etc) or u just can't watch dvds?

if u just can't watch dvds, that makes sense. windows doesn't include its own MPEG2 codec.

You can't watch DVDs and you can't burn DVDs without loading something more than XP, for everything else the drive works fine.

For those turning their machines on for the first time, and looking a 2 hours of uninstalling crap, do a google search for "Dell decrapifier" or "decrapify Dell" There are two nice packages out there to make your life much easier

without getting too deep into the technical aspect of it, both of those would be the same speed, latency wise.

so not much of a performance difference between the 2?

i have a question. if i get 533 ram, i'll be able to use the 512 that came w/ my laptop and still maintain 533 ram right? even though it's different brand and size. i know this is true for desktops

will there be a 667MHz processor, with a lower latency anytime soon?

the core-series processors that are out right now have a 667mhz bus speed.

the latency, however, is a question of the memory. there is CAS4 667mhz memory out there, but it's not very common at this point.
