Thank you so much for all of the info! I was just going to start cannibalizing my F15... which died just 2 weeks out of the original extended (2year) warranty (I'm guessing mine lasted so long because of my constant use of a laptop cooler)...when I stumbled upon this terrific resource. You folks are great.

Anyway, as of today Toshiba is sending me a box to ship my computer back in. (This will be my second mobo..first came 6 mos after purchase) I guess I'll get to look forward to a loud and probably unreliable mobo upgrade! But heck I'll take it.

Hoping for a replacement...guessing I'll get the runaround. You may contact me about participation in a class action lawsuit...

Thanks again everyone!

Well...Toshiba was incredibly fast...I sent the computer out from Honolulu on Monday and it was back on Saturday with a new board.

However, the Qosmio intermittantly shuts down and was having a thread stuck in device error until I undid the hardware acceleration and removed the Nvidia drivers. However, now I am unable to reload the drivers (noting that the new board has the upgrading Nvdia graphics chip). I tried loading from nvidia.com and toshiba.com using another model that has the 6xxx chip and the nvida installer doesn't recognize the hardware. I want to reload the drivers and see if the intermittant shutdown and thread error disappear and reappear respectfully. So that's my update...

To all of you out there that are having ongoing problems with your G15. Keep fighting with Toshiba. They WILL recognise the extended warranty of 12 months outside of the US. I posted my problems here on 06-22-2007 (june 22). After a number of letters with the authorised repairer who flatly refused to recognise the existence of the extended warranty here in Singapore, Toshiba (SNG) have issued an instruction to them to repair it. The repair constitutes a replacement of the Board and Screen which they had previously told me would cost 3,850.

The pen IS mightier than the sword if wielded with carefully constructed threats to take legal action.

An update...as I mentioned I began to have problems with the repaired Qosmio the day I received it back from the depot. So I called Toshiba a day or two later and they said I could either send it back again or take it to the local authorized service center. So I gave the local shop a try this time and 8 days later... I had my computer back with yet ANOTHER new motherboard...this makes #4! It's been a a little over a week and the computer is still working...so I'm hopeful.

Hi, I've a friend with a F10 in the UK. Its also failed with this error. At the time he contacted Toshiba and was told to go jump in terms of getting it fixed (was around 18 months old) THink it was something like £600/£800 to get it fixed and it needed a new motherboard.

I've got the laptop in bits and can't see anything specific that is blown. Would it just be a case of trying to replace the GFX chip on it with another 5700?

Anyone got any ideas if a DIY fix is possible?

Cheers

If you can find a good motherboard probably you can fix it yourself. As for component level, if you have a rework station maybe you can do it as well.

I thought I might add that when my machine was returned to me after the second repair request, it appears that no actual repair of the systemboard was attempted by the repair facility. I believe that once the BestBuy repair facility got the machine, they simply put the notice to exchange the machine between the keyboard and the screen and shipped it back. I picked it up without checking it out and found the memo inside. I also understand that at one time, Toshiba was attempting to install upgraded boards in the G15, but it now appears that they are replacing the machines. If you think it will help, I can fax to you a copy of the exchange memo that I found in my old machine. I think it is probably a BestBuy interoffice memo, but it might help. I also don't understand why they would need your machine at this point, except to facilitate an exchange for a new unit. And by the way, where is Circuit City in all this? BestBuy was right there for me and arranged the exchange for the new machine once they saw the memo. Another possible solution....Will your company allow you to return the machine to Toshiba if all data is removed? I found that even with the bad system board, I was able to boot in "safe mode with networking" and transfer my data files to another machine over my LAN before I sent my G15 in for its second service call. If you can get your machine to boot this way, you should be able to delete all your info before sending in the machine. If you wish me to fax the memo, send me your number. Good luck, Rich

My F10 died on me with a faulty motherboard a while ago... I contacted Toshiba and stated that I was looking around their forums, as well as elsewhere, and people were reporting that it was a manufacturer defect in the mobo. They didn't confirm anything, but they did immediately offer to repair the unit free of charge, as well as upgrade to the newer motherboard with the 6800 go chipset.

When I had went to the place I bought the notebook (Staples I believe) they stated that they've heard nothing about this, and it would cost me $900CAD to get it repaired through them.

I didn't need any memo or anything of the sort... I just sounded pretty pissed and stated that I saw a tonne of cases of this exact same problem through the forums.

Hi Muzzi

I sent the fax this morning. Tried to send an email to your hotmail account, however, it said that Hotmail no longer accepted emails from Outlook Express (??). So let me know if you didn't get the fax.

Toshiba Memo

Thanks, Rich I received the Fax this morning. Is this fax only for Best Buy. Could I use it if I bought my laptop from COMPUSA. Also how do I get teh Service Order Number. I am not sure exactly how I would take it to the store along with my laptop to get an exchange. Also is it still valid considering its dated 2006. Thanks, Muzzi

I am new to this forum. I also have the Toshiba G15 which has been repaired twice due to motherboard and is now going out again due to video/graphic card for third time. Lines came, then locked up, after several attempts got it boot back up and ran for about an hour, locked up again and now will not boot at all. First repair done a year after purchase in home (12/12/05), second repair had to send off to depot a year later (12/06), took about 10 days to receive back and had scratches all over the lid. Also received letter about extended 12 month limited warranty which stated would start after my warranty ended. I had purchased the extended warranty from Toshiba's website with in home service through 12/2007 so I had foolishly assumed that toshibia's limited warranty would be in place until 12/2008. Am told that the extended warranty purchased from Toshiba's website is a third party extended warranty and does apply and all warranties ended in 12/2007. I called the National Parts Depot that is authorized by Toshiba - motherboard is $722. I am livid. Paid $3,000 for a faulty product. My husband wants to file a class action suit and after reading all the reviews about these products should not have a problem. I had gotten most of my info off but not all and need help with how I might be able to get the rest off. I have moderate computer knowledge and would like to now about the safeboot networking over lan? I was told by a person that works for Servicenet the third party servicer for Toshiba's warranties that the Qosmio was taken off the website completely and not available anymore about 2 weeks ago. I have gotten nothing but the run around and transfered who knows where in the world. This is my second Toshiba (first was a Satellite P15 which still runs perfectly) but after this I would not purchase another Toshiba product. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Muzzi Those are all good questions, however, I'm not sure of the answers. I offered the memo (which, at that time, explained how BestBuy was instructed to deal with the situation by Toshiba) in the hope it would clear a path for the replacement of these defective machines. From the posts that have appeared since my initial post, it seems that some are successful in convincing Toshiba to replace their machine, while others are told to submit the machine for repair (sometimes repeatedly). I offered the Memo to show that, at that time I had my problem, Toshiba was instructing BestBuy to replace these machines rather than repair them. If you are not a BestBuy customer, I think you could try to use the Memo with your seller to give them the basis to discuss replacement with Toshiba. The other factor that may be coming into play could be the age of the machines. It has now been some time since Toshiba sold the F15 and G15 machines. But if I were you, I would still give it a try. (BTW, I think the "service order number" is referring to the repair order Best Buy assigned when I initially took the machine in for repair.) Good Luck, Rich
