Toshiba Exchanging G15 and F15s due to faulty boards! - Page 4

Well, surfing the internet 15 minutes ago, a two inch wide white stripe appeared on my monitor. Everything else working fine, of but I can't see what I'm typing when the cursor goes through the stripe. Toshiba told me the same thing. They are sending me a box and I have to send the laptop in for system board enhancement. This is the second mother board on this F15 which I purchased in May 2005. The first motherboard was replaced in Nov 2005, and Toshiba gave me an extra year warranty. The first time they sent a tech to my house and the repair was done on my kitchen table. Bummer that these pricey machines keep breaking but I must say the customer support has been good. Tech support is really of no use, they are just reading instructions they don't seem to really know anything. I will post back after I send it out, and I will definitely call the repair depot to see how long this will take.

Hello all, just sent my G10 (Canada) in as well, although i found out about the replacement in a round about way. Must say i am quite tee'd off that we are not notified about this directly, what the hell did i register my system for otherwise! After my first board replacement last October, i was without my system for 3 months, i then had to fight with support for 3 odd weeks just to get another 3 months of warrenty!

Anyway, here's hoping all goes well and i get my system back safe and sound soon. And supposedly improved! ???

Anybody got any new specs on this board, or even better benchmarks?

Ah if only they could just replace it with a G35 eh?

Rich, I was wondering if you could please fax me a copy of the memo. I just sent my computer out last month to the TOSHIBA TECH DEPOT even though I have on site warrenty. They had it for close to a month. The have replaced the motherboard 5 times, hard drive twice and LCD screen. I got it back 4 days ago and already have lines going through the screen, the computer is slower than ever, and it sounds like a jet plane with the new fans they put in. They are sending an on-site tech out but this is getting old. I asked Toshiba when will they finally call this a lemon after 5 motherboards and 2 hard drives and etc etc. They said to wait till the extended warrenty through them wears out and then take it back to CompUSA. This is a joke.

Fax 954-495-8862
or if anyone else received this fax please forward it to me
Thank you

my G15 story

I bought this G15 in 1/2005, and first thing I noticed was the dead pixels across the middle of LCD display. Toshiba replaced the LCD monitor on site.

After several months, the infamous 'blue screen' started to appear occasionally. I still can live with that. After this happened, the notebook only last for maybe 2 weeks. The display was gone and I can only start in safe mode. A lot of white stripes or blue stripes crossing the display.

So call up support, check it was truely G15 problems. Send it to a local service agent. That was around 7/2005. According to that repair store, they replace the system board. After this fix, everything seemed fine until my speakers start to fail. At beginning, only the right speaker failed, and then both speakers failed. (but I used the external speaker through earphone connection till last week). Before the end of my standard warranty, I decided to purhase 2 more years of warranty.

Last weekend, the blue screen started again. I cannt reboot and can only start in safe mode.
Time to call Toshiba again... the customer service asked to me send the notebook to local service. I took it in 9/11/2006. After leaving the service shop for about 15 min, the lady called.."we are sorry, we cannt repair this particular model...blah blah"
I went back and picked it up. They gave me this bulletin from Toshiba regarding F15 and G15 system board enhancement program.
This was issued in 2/2006. We poor users only know in Septebmber.
I wandered how many people actually did this enhancement. Btw, at the end of that bulletin, there is an opt out for this enhancement too. (but toshiba not recommend to opt out)
Base on the bulletin, this enhancement supposed to replace the graphic driver and some other parts to provide better capability. Therefore when the notebook is returned to you. the model number will be different.

Did anyone know about the model number changed after replacement?

my G15 was shippped by UPS today...

Taylor 810: I can fax the memo tomorrow from my office. Push for the replacement deal!

Oscar, I can't believe you have been through such an ordeal. If you need a copy of the memo to argue with Toshiba, drop me a fax number. I am sure glad my G15 was replaced in light of the continuing horror stories on this board. This is really getting out of control and I think Toshiba needs to modify how it handles people who have already had more than two or three repairs to the same machine!

I just wonder how many "former" Toshiba customers there are now out there who just threw in the towel on these machines without knowing about these replacment/enhancement programs. If the unit had already gone out of its 1 year warranty, I suspect a lot of people just junked these "top o' the line" machines and bought something else (probably from another manufacturer). Really a shame because the Qosmio is a great machine. Toshiba really needs to take additional steps to get on top of this!

A440,

What is your F15 issue? Is it in for the systemboard enhancement ?
When did you send it in ?

According to the systemboard enhancement bulletin, this should not take more than a week. It said 10 days including shipping.

Taylor 810, Oscar C and A440:
I just faxed the Bestbuy Memo to each of you.
Good luck, Rich
Rich, thx for the fax

Oscar, they also advised me about 7-10 days. I think they've had it for about a week. Online status indicates it's in repair for motherboard. I'm going to try and call them for more details.

per my prior post, I initially had flickering screen, then black with white stripe down the side, then went totally black. (bad LCD screen). mine worked ok using an external monitor

Thanks Rich, The onsite tech was just here and replaced the led screen again in 10 days. He also broke the hinge. And luckly he was here when it was overheating and kept shutting down. He asked me when to reschedule. I told him forget it. Hopefully this letter and a little elbow grease will get me somewhere with Toshiba.

thanks, get the fax.

You are the lucky one I believe.

Do any other people have BBY warranty or extended warranty?
I bought it in CC and now I only have toshiba warranty (till 1/2008). I doubt I can use this for argument.

Maybe I should buy circuit city program for this purpose?

What do you think ?

A440, is yours in KY too?

toshiba Qosmio warranty
http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/cont...087012_web.pdf

2nd page, 2nd paragraph ,
During the Limited Warranty Period, Toshiba will, in its
sole discretion, restore the Product to working order in
accordance with factory specifications in effect at the
time the Product was manufactured or replace the
defective Product with a product that is at least equivalent
to the original Product.

....

The product here means Qosmio , right ?
But it did not say what the conditions are to replace the product. Can someone check it out?

yes, mine's in the KY Depot btw, my warranty had expired. they took it in - no questions asked. I didn't purchase at Best Buy either. All I had sprung for was the Systemguard Warranty and that had also expired. I wonder what model they would consider equivalent if granting replacement ??
I think they may try to put the G25 board into G15 ...

I am not sure about the nvidia gpu 6600 quality.

I think big companies just screwed poor users like us.
just found this extension warranty from TAIS
http://askiris.toshiba.com/ToshibaSu...alogID=5771127

This means I will have my warranty to 2009 .

Hey Oscar and A440.... I think you may be misreading the bestbuy memo. It clearly states that the replacement program is a Toshiba Program. It specifically says that this replacement program is not related to the Bestbuy extended warranty at all. The reason I think this memo might help any Qosmio owner is because it is confirming that Toshiba has ordered the replacement of the defective machine, not Bestbuy.

Oscar: On the extension of the factory warranty by Toshiba, I think the maximum FACTORY warranty you have on a G15 is two (2) years from date of purchase. I don't think it adds on to the end of any third party extended warranty you may have purchased from the dealer. (In fact, I think it means absolutely nothing to someone who has purchased the Toshiba extended warranty)
hmmm it may be worth a try.

what is confusing to me is my certificate said 1/2009
but on the web, the lookup is 1/2008 ...

and your memo dated 4/2006
the systemboard enhancement program dated 2/2006
post #80 of 252
rich, I understand that it's a Toshiba program

my F15 is presently at their Depot for repair. I'll keep a copy of this memo around in case I have further problems. may give me a leg to stand on if I want to push for replacement
