What memory tests do yo guys use?

Ive never tried to test memory before but Im trying to learn because Ive got 2Gigs of RAM on the way for an upgrade on my Sager 5710.

I downloaded memtest86 v3.2 and decided to run it on my laptop before the upgrade just so I know whats what. I started getting errors right away and then I went to the advanced setting and it said "chipset not supported!"

I looked at Docmemory also and it requires to be run on floppy disk and I cant have that because my lappy dont have one.

So I could use some advice please.

Hell I was just running the tests for shits and giggles just so Ill be ready when my new RAM gets here but this is depressing... And also wrong probably because this laptop has never even had an issue in the weeks Ive had it. Its just been perfect... So why all the failed tests?

http://www.memtest.org/ Download the precompiled ISO. Burn that to a CD. Set your boot order to boot off the CD. Memtest should start running right away. Run that for a few hours and if it reports any errors, you got bad RAM.

You ran memtest v3.2 and I linked you memtest+, which is an updated version. You were confused about running memtest off "a floppy disk", so I assumed you ran the test wrong. Did you run the original memtest while an operating system (such as Windows) was running? Or did you boot off some sort of external media such as floppy, usb stick, cd, etc...?

if ur laptop has been performing fine, i would not be worried about it. test tool does not mean having the final say of how a system is running. for overall performance test, i would recommend SysTool. this would give u a good overview of the system.

SoftSandra is another performance test tool of choice.

they both offer free version

Oh I didnt know that was an updated version. Sorry. Maybe Ill give it a try but I dont know, Im unimpressed with memory tests so far.

About the floppy: I cant run a floppy profram on my laptop as it doesnt have a floppy drive and I dont have an external floppy drive. I need programs I can burn on a disk.

I ran the programs correctly Im pretty sure. I burned them to disk and booted up with them in the drive so I was running the programs without windows.

Alright I like Memtest86+ and after further review I also like Microsoft Windows Memory Diagnostic. Heres why:

For some reason while running Memtest86+ I actually started paying attention to the errors where as before the numbers and statistics were just overwhelming me. I basically just look at the Failing Address now and doing that I found I have 3 Failing Addresses according to memtest86+.

So I decided maybe I didnt give the others a fair shake and so I ran Misrosift Windows Memory Diagnostic again and found just 1 Failing Address. The address was the one of the same ones memtest86+ found.

SO ANYWAY! I removed one stick of RAM and am running Memtest86+ again. Actually its already done with the first pass and NO ERRORS! I actually did have a bad stick of Ram I guess but my pc was running great. Maybe I ruined this stick by taking it out the other day to look at the type while the laptop battery was still in the pc?

*EDIT* I also ran Microsoft Windows Memory Diagnostic again and have NO ERRORS.
