This is my last poll about my laptop purchase I promise! I just want to be really sure and assured that I am making the right decision...I am very wary about spending money, especially this much..and I want to know that I will be happy with the product I recieve and have no regrets about it...

PS: What does user upgradable video graphics card mean? That the laptop does not come with it but I can get it, or what?

The Laptops:

Dell XPS M1210
http://www.dell.com/content/products...n&s=eep&~ck=mn

12.1 inch screen
1.83 Dual Core
80 gig HD
1 gig ram
256 Nvida GeForce Go7400
DVD Burner
4.5 pounds
4 year Complete Care warrenty

Total: $1,761.85

Portable One MX
http://laptopsinc.com/Merchant2/merc...ct_Code=MXA8JM

14.1 inch screen
1.83 dual core
100 gig HD
1 gig ram
NVidia GeForce Go7600 512MB VRAM (UPRGRADABLE)
DVD burner
5.5 pounds
3 year warrenty

Total: $1,699

Is the extra pound worth it? I have narrowed it down to these two laptops. I have heard lots of good things about ASUS, and the Portable One company has a very good reputation. Anyways, thank you for taking the time to help me out with this, and all of my other polls as well. Any help is greatly appreciated and you will be repped, that is a promise

User upgradable graphics means that the GPU is modular, ie, it can be removed from the laptop and another one can be put in. In the past, all GPUs were soldered onto the motherboard, making it nearly impossible to upgrade laptops without replacing the whole motherboard. Now, the system will come with a chip. However, if a better GPU comes out that is compatible with your system, you can just replace the current one.

Edit: I picked the Asus simply because while I like the idea of a small, compact 12 incher, that is just TOO small for me. I spend a lot of time each day working on a computer, and when I saw my first 12" screen at Fry's, I immediately knew that the wow-factor would wear off in about 30 minutes and I would probably chuck the laptop out of the window. Both will provide decent enough support, esp. with 3-4 year warranties.

If you feel your eyesight is good enough for a high resolution 12" screen, then, by all means, go with the M1210.

Wow, it is looking like the Portable One has it in the bag

Does the Portable One also have the longest lasting value? (will keep up with the market fairly well for the next 3 years at least?)

The Dell is "overweight" for a 12 incher...

Does your meaning of keep up with the market mean play new games at max settings? It might last a year. But you still should be able to play games at reasonable settings for 2 years atleast.

One thing is for sure, the Portable One has a longer lasting value than the Dell. All you buy is the xps name, and a prettier cover

I have an M1210, but comparing those two systems at those prices, I'd pick the MX. The 7600 is a large step above the 7400, and the MX has a couple other nice features that put it ahead of the M1210 in my opinion, like the DVI-out port and gigabit ethernet.

The MX. That 7600 card is way better than the 7400, due to its (huge) 512mb dedicated memory. After all, it's merely a rebadged A8Jm, so you get that sweet Asus build quality as well.

DAMMIT! I just ordered the m1210! I would have bout the MX if I new it existed

Asus A8Jm instead of XPS M1210?

I bought the M1210 too. Upgraded to 7200 RPM 60 GB drive, Nvidia 7400, 9-Cell battery, and Audigy. Came with a free upgrade to 2GB (533MHz) RAM, which dissappeared very fast on the website. I didn't opt for the AV communications package. I think it's a little useless, and spoils the look of the laptop. Got a mouse as well. With 3 yr complete care, it came to $2150 (Canadian dollars). A little pricey but not too bad. I really like the specs on the Asus A8Jm though. Powerful, with all the connectivity you could want. DVI is particularly nice. The GPU is nicer as well. Might've bought this had I seen it first. Here's a link to a Canadian seller who's got it for $1729:

These guys allow you to upgrade various parts for reasonable prices. But I thought the NIC was supposed to be gigabit on this model, and this one doesn't have it.

The Dell still looks better in my opinion and does have the better warranty. The care package I have includes service in countries all over the world. That' especially sweet considering I plan to do some travelling. And if you're gonna travel, a 12.1 inch is just way less hassle. I'll see how much mine weighs when I get it. It's suppposed to come this Fri (June 16).

The Portable One MX is the same thing as A8JM..only I believe it has the gigabit in it..the case is exactly the same and everything

I only ordered my m1210 two days ago.

1. Should I cancel for the MX?

2. Do I NEED the screen upgrade on it? How good is the screen without the upgrade?

Well that a wrap. This was not even close...

I bet you do! Haha..yes..I edited it a little..
You can buy the A8JM in Canada.. but in the US they called it the Portable One MX...
Does this mean that you'll be buying the Portable One MX?
mayaman2, you can purchase the A8Jm from Portableone.com as the PortableOne MX. It is not available anywhere else in the US, I don't believe. It's 7600 scored a 4105 in 3Dmark05 in someone's review on here. Normally, the x1600 scores around 3600-3800. So it did substantially better, but not massively.
