Installing Vista Beta 2 on 7700 [Tips and Tricks How-To]

Thread Starter
I got Vista running on my lappy...and after all the troubles installing I thought maybe someone could use some help.

For a single OS go to Installing Vista.

[Multiboot XP]
1. Create a new partition for vista on your hard drive using any partition tool. eg Partition Magic.
2. Make a clean WinXP install on the partition.

[Installing Vista]
1. Install the latest WinXP drivers for your lappy. [available on the download area]
2. Get Vista ISO You won't need to burn it, don't worry about that.
3. Mount the ISO onto a virtual drive using NERO, Alcohol 120%, or any similar tool. Feel free to use Microsoft's Virtual Drive Recommended for Multibooting
4. Once the cd is mounted run the vista installer and perform an UPGRADE - THIS IS IMPORTANT - A CLEAN INSTALL WONT WORK.
5. Follow Instructions to install Vista.
6. Vista should be running now.

[Setting Up]
1. If Glass is not running, you should download the latest vista drivers and INF from LaptopVideo2Go, you should activate vista and perform a performance rating, then change the theme to aero. That should work - more on these later when i figure out how i got to them...the control panel is a maze.

2. If the audio is not working, download the vista beta drivers on the download area. The audio should work, but there aren't any realtek control panels. 5.1 is enabled by right clicking on the sound icon on the taskbar, selecting audio devices, going into speakers, then onto configuration.

More to be added later... hope this helps

Area-51m 7700

I was able to do a fresh install booted from a dvd of the installer by using a second cd drive with the following files:

ptipbm.dll
ULSATA.CAT
UlSata.inf
ulsata.sys

and telling it to install driver during the install process.

If you experience jumpy mouse syndrome, just use an external mouse and keep a finger or a coin sitting on your touchpad. The nvidia drivers are working great. Synaptics driver fixed touchpad issue. Webcam works out of box, so does atheros driver. Only issue I have is is that the webcam doesn't show up in my computer any more. Still shows up in MSN and the likes.

I'm using the 88.61 nvidia drivers and the aero-glass effect is nice and smooth. I upgraded to the latest windows update nvidia drivers for vista and glass went away. Downgraded and it's working again.

On a note:

The only drivers I had to manually install were nvidia and synaptics. It found the rest of my hardware (area-51m 7700) just fine.
