Lower priority wireless network always selected!

Hey,

At home I have a wireless G router from netgear. It's set up w/ WPA protection, and I use the windows utility to set it up. Everything works fine, except, once more connections get put into the list, and even though these connections are put as lower priority, it always selects the lower priority one over my higher priority home network.

It might be important to say that my router doesn't broadcast SSID, and for some reason, I rarely see it show up in the looking for wireless networks screen, it just gets connected somehow, but when you click refresh, you still don't see it in the list.

Help,

Flaviu

In the properties of your connection is there a check mark in connect to this network automatically when in range?

Yes...

Don't know if this applies, Flav.... but I'm using the IntelPROsetĀ® software because it allows me to exclude all wireless networks except for my own.

(Actually, it does allow me to exclude my own, but what would be the point?)

Works flawlessly, except for when coming off standby. In that case, I need to disconnect/reconnect.

The software in Windows is much better than the Intel stuff.

If you open your wireless network window that shows all within range, click "Change Advanced Settings" on the left hand side. You should be on the "Wireless Networks" tab but if not, go to it.

Under "Preferred Networks" you should see your network and possibly some others as well. These are the networks that you connect to automatically. You can change them to "On Demand" as well, but I would suggest just removing any networks that aren't your own. That way, you'll only connect automatically to yours. Also, I always hear people say not to broadcast your SSID, but if you have some security set up on it, I wouldn't worry too much about it. That way you will always see your network when you refresh etc.

Yea I know about the list... BTW, is there a way to stop them from getting on the list automatically if you connect to them?

That's a good point about the SSID, it'll prbly fix it choosing a network lower on the list as well.

I don't think there is a way to stop the networks from going to that list, unfortunately. I wish there was. It seems as soon as you connect once, it does it automatically from then on until you change it manually.
