Ooook. Here is my story. LOL My computer has been constantly getting virsuses and spyware so I have to completely wipe my hard drive and reinstall all of the drivers whuch takes about 3-4 hours (I have done this about 10 times now!). I have tried to use system restore in the past and all of the time the virus or spyware has it disabled so that's no good. My wife is upset because we can't get any of our pictures and documents off of the hard drive because the CD burner isn't working now (I think it is virus related)and I have no idea how to get about 6 Gig of data off of the drive. The virus has also prevented me from getting into the Windows Firewall program to change the setttings. so, I am not able to get on the internet at all. This is getting really old. I am curious how everyone else around here backs up their data and re-installs without have to go about it the long way! Thanks!

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I was using Avast anti virus (which is now totally messed up) on my computer so it's not like I left my computer totally suceptable.

If you have a working internet connection download the following

1. AVG free anti-virus
2. Ad-aware (Lavasoft)
3. Spybot search and destroy

install all of the above and get all of the updates, (you may have to un-install avast first atleast before avg).
Turn off you computer then re-boot and hit f8 during post, this should give you a new menu which will give the option to boot windows into safe mode do that and run all of the programs I listed.

Good luck.
PS; also I almost forgot right click my computer goto properties then system restore tab and un-check it, you need to disable restore before doing this or your viruses will be in the restore volume and re-surface.

Once you've got all of these programs working and everything cleaned ya can boot into windows normally then we can talk about backing up your data.

well...

In terms of keeping important documents...

I keep one copy on my computer, one copy on an external HD, and one on a flashdrive.

Needless to say, these are some pretty important documents.

By the way... how are you getting infected so often? With **updated** virus protection and firewall you should be fine unless you download from the internet a lot and you happen to open an infected file before your virus protection is able to detect it and deny access...

Problem #1: I don't have a usb stick (now , I am really considering getting one) BTW, can you boot from a usb stick?

Problem #2: My work computer doesn't have a CD burner

Thanks for trying though.

1) you can boot from a usb stick on some computers, there has to be a setting in the bios, not all computers support this.

2) that sucks.

my solution to the virus problem:
step 1) STOP VISITING PORN SITES!!!
2) Spybot (better than ad-aware imo)
3) avast (avg failed me so many times its not even funny)
4) keep your system up to date
5) did i say stop going to porn sites?

well, that at least would have been my solution back when i used to be a slave to the microsoft corporation, currently i just use linux and dont worry about it.

or you can just get a new computer and start over...once you retrieve your life from the other one, that is...

Use Firefox or Opera for going to websites. Try restarting the computer in safe mode and uncheck system restore if Windows detects the changing of important files (which some viruses disguise themselves as) it will restore them including the viruses.

That would be great. However, I don't think the wife would agree..

Would Norton Ghost be a good investment?
Get a small external HD to backup all of your important stuff on.

if you have allready had to reformat 10 times, then yes.

This has gotta be one of the funniest threads ever
definitely follow abf's advise and stop visiting the porn sites.. Most people learn after two or three reformats

BTW, if you happen to have any "important documents" already on floppy or CD or something, might want to virus scan those before you put them back on and definitely get a cd or dvd burner. I'd be beyond pi$$ed if I lost all of our digital pictures and that's why I have them on multiple backups...

Of course... some things are unvaluable. Pictures are one of them. Currently, I have three backup sources for each digital picture I ever had. If one goes away, I still have two.
