Warranty recommendation - Mail in or On site

What is you experience with the Dell warranty. I am fairly computer literate, so the only issues I can see that I would use the warranty for is Hardware replacement and such. Is there Mail in warranty pretty efficient and speedy, or would you recommend paying the extra $100 for the onsite? Plus I'm fairly new to laptops, so are the on-site technicians usually able to replace anything on the laptop onsite? I've read that they will do motherboards on-site, so I would assume they would do most anything.

BTW, by efficient and speedy, would I get my Laptop back in 7-10 days, or am I looking at longer.

I have the on sight and I think its a great option. I had Dell send a tech out to my place twice to replace the screen in my 8600. Both times the screen was just as bad (Both screens are refurbs). They are now sending me a new 8600 with a pre-paid air bill for the other 8600. I have found their CS very good.

I enjoy the fact that I can have the tech come out to my home or business and replace anything that I have a problem with, that's just me. Just remember they will send refurb stuff in most situations.

Also, some techs are flaky bastards who will call you and say that they will show up at 1 and never show up!

Is it worth it??? Yes for me it is!

If 7-10 days is speedy for you then Mail in is fine in fact most problems that can be fixed by simple part replacement you can call in and have the part mailed to you and do it yourself which takes a lot less time then sending it in or waiting for a tech to come by and do it. save yourself the hundred bucks and get the 3 or 4 year mail in

Yes, but what if you cant fix the part with the replacement???? Then would that extra 100 been worth the two week wait????

Sometimes the techs come at awkward times and im usually not home during work days so it benefits me to have it delivered to my neighers or my cousins doorman longer the warrenty the better remember that.

I would assume that if they'll send it too you and let you do it yourself, which isn't a problem for me, that the warranty will stay intact?

I was planning on 3 years, that's about how long I keep a computer for, and I'm going to be one of the test guinea pigs on the xps, so 3 years should be a reasonable expectation.

In a lot of cases the mail in service is taking the same amount of time as the at home service for repair, Due to BO problems on most parts,Dell is slow about getting a tech out to your home so save the hundred bucks because rarely will they send a tech simply because most parts they will mail to you have you put in yourself.......

Thanks Warlord (and Dell-Machina and Alittlefly),
I thought maybe the tech having parts might be an issue. I think I'll save the $100.

Thanks again

or you send it back and airborne looses it.

Yes, that would be fun!

You would think the on-site service would be less problematic. No need to ship or receive the unit and no time without it. Nothing in life is trouble free. Just like doctors, lawyers and plumbers; not all techs are the same. We had a tech come to our house to replace a motherboard and after he left, we discovered that he had screwed up the keyboard.
