Installing VMWare on an E1505

I'm interested in running VMWare on my E1505 (Windows host) running Linux in the virtual system. I have a 100GB HDD, partitioned by Dell as 70GB for Windows and a 30GB "Backup" (for Ghost, I assume).

Should I modify the partition setup for the Linux installation? I understand that VMWare can create a virtual partition file, which ought to allow the virtual machine to be moved/backed-up if I so desire. I don't know which way would be best.

Clearly I'm a VMWare noob... thanks in advance for your suggestions.

I installed VMWare Server beta and then loaded Kubuntu 6.06 LTS into a 6GB virtual drive. I opted for the virtual drive so I could easily copy it off and restore it if needed. Plus no mods to the disk layout.

The only things I see not working at the moment are audio and wireless. I didn't try to set up the native display resolution, opting instead for 1280x1024 so it fits on my 1680x1050 Windows desktop well.

Everything really went off without a hitch.

I use vmware daily... any questions you have send them on this way... to start if you can avoid it DONT put a VMware image on the same HDD as in the laptop... the program itself sure... but not an image... you HDD head will go crazy reading and writting all the time... get an external USB or Esata drive... works wonders...

Also, make sure you go into the BIOS and enable the VT option.

Ah, thanks for that. I checked and it was enabled by default, but I hadn't known there was a BIOS item for that despite having gone in to check out the setup when the system arrived.

Funny thing is, installing VMWare prevents my friends from seeing my computer in LOTR: Battle for Middle Earth 2 LAN game. I traced the problem to the VMWare virtual NIC 7 & 8 -- disabling both magically made my computer re-appear in the game.
