Antivirus

Question?

Which antivirus is the best?
Avast or AVG

A friend had got a virus on his computer even though he was running Avast. We tried everything to get rid of to no end. He paid a guy 50 bucks to remove it. Apparantly all the guy did was remove avast and install AVG which to care of the virus.

Any thoughts on this?

The reason I ask is I'm restoring another friends computer that got a virus and he was not running any antivirus software. I wondering which would be the best to install. I'm running the free version of Avast on all my computers without any problems.

This is exactly what happened to me as well!! After the re-install, I am giving AVG a try!

if you want a good pay antivirus try NOD32.

I have both, Avast on the Lappy, and AVG on my Desktop. They both run well in my opinion.

NO Antivirus software is 100%, so don't expect it to be!

Lastly, there is NO reason to ever have to pay for Antivirus software.

i used to use AVG home edition(free one) before for about a year and never had any problems with it. Its residential shield is good for real-time protection. So i'd say go with AVG.
Now i have Trend Micro and it works gr8 too.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll stick with Avast for a while.

For a powerful system (at least 256 mg memory) kespersky is the best, but for a weak system Nod32 can be one of my choices.

back up rezareza - But as long as you don't install an open door like Norton crap, and don't surf to crack sites, most antivirus should be fine.
Nod32 is the fastest and has the best realtime protection, though kaspersky is very close up. Kaspersky since the new version is also fast and has the best on demand scan.

For best protection have Nod32 running and use kaspersky for on demand scan.

I personally REALLY like NOD32.
I have it on all my systems (and even put it on my parents) and no problems for the past year (and my Dad has a tendency to get viruses, especially when he was using norton)

I believe so.
I was able to get in on a deal (I think it was thru newegg/zipzoomfly or such online retailer) where I got a 2 year license for about $20 (this was about 1 year ago).

It is the only antivirus I will spend my money on (until something better comes out)

I have been trying AOL's new Active Virus Shield, based on Kaspersky version 6, so far so good and it's much more customizable than AVG But compared with AVG Free, the need for a separate registration key for each computer leaves a lot to be desired though

Why is there a difference? I've never heard anyone discuss a AV choice in relation to the power of the machine or the type of memory. Not saying you're incorrect, but don't understand the logic, unless it has something to do with the system resources being used.

NOD32 has some of the lowest resourch usages of the available antivirus progs.
I have strong systems (2gig ram, 4ghz cpus etc...) and I still prefer NOD32 since it works great and I like having as much available resources as I can.
But yea, if you have say a lappy with a 600mzh P3, 256mb ram... then I would say NOD32 is your best bet for AV since it wont take up much of the 256mb ram and keep your system running faster.

For a test, try installing norton or mcafee on a P3 600mhz w/256MB ram and you will see teh system crawl and take forever to boot, then remove and put in NOD32 and watch your system performance increase!
