You may have been trying the cheapest version. You have to go to the second cheapest to get dual core. Also, you can get all of your coupons from here:

So any suggestions for options?

Some necessary options are,

Nvidia 7900 gpu
at least an 80 gb hard drive
2 gb ram

Some type of at home repair would be nice. If they can fix it without shipping, or paying for shipping that would be great. Also I hope the warranty is hoaky like phillips.

any suggestions for bang for the buck interms of processor, hd drive size & speed, warranty plan would be great. Also I'm used to a WSXGA 17" screen from my sager. Should I go WUXGA now? Or is the resolution too small to be useful and can't be adjusted. Hopefully I can keep the price below 1700.

Does it idle at 65? That's a lot hotter than my previous laptops idle. Supposedly it has little to no noise fanwise.

Personally, I would go for the WUXGA. That's a lot of room for your work, no pesky toolbars in your way. I would just go with a 5400 RPM HDD. 80GB is probably plenty and can always be upgraded or you can get an external hard drive. With the CPU, I would get at least the 1.86 Ghz. As for Ram, I'd definately get the bare minimum from Dell and buy the 2 GB from Newegg.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231042

Just an example. The speed from 533mhz to 667 mhz is so minimal you probably wouldn't notice it.

I'm not too sure about which warranty will fullfil your needs. I think this one would do:
3 Year Limited Warranty plus 3 Year At-Home Service plus Nights and Weekend
I think the only one that's not an at-home service is the minimum service. I would look up some info on that before you buy.

Anyways, that setup brings me up to about $1500, throw $70 in for an extra 1 GB of RAM and it's under $1700.

The upgrade in CPU is pretty high right now (http://www.notebookforums.com/thread158519.html) so you may want to wait as the CPU prices are expected to drop in the next couple of weeks. I'm not sure what your timetable is, so that one is up to you.

Hope that helps. Any more questions?

I'm not sure if the idling temp is 21 C or 60 C its quite a difference. My sager got really hot. Also I have to consider if I want lighter laptop or not. This is about the same weight. But supposedly the gpu can do realtime SSS, radiosity and HDR. This is really tempting Although zbrush can do most of this realtime already on the 9700 mobility. No native SSS shaders though, you have to fake them. Also I heard there is a gpu renderer called gelato. I'm not how that works.

So it seems either I get a 6 pounder or an 8 pounder. Decisions decisions.

Tell me a bout it. I'm in the same boat. I've just already asked all of these questions

Gelato is from Nvidia and basically uses the GPU to aide in the rendering process. I've never used it, but it's now free.

So, yeah, we're in this one together.

Here's a big question. What's the exact weight and max and min temperatures of both laptops?
I think the E1705 is 8.5 lbs and the S96J is 6.5. As for temps, I dont think either get warm, but I don't know the temps.

I checked out the thread but I don't see too many current laptop comparisons. Now about Dell, would it really be wise to by a Dell now? My last laptop just was sent into the repair shop for smoking, I guess due to the battery. I don't know what the cause is yet. Anyway I'm worried about batteries catching on fire burning down my apartment. Also this happened with a mac ibook.

I would get the dell... but you should take a look at the dell outlet, there have been GREAT deals for the M90 there... I saw a few with 2GB ram, 2.16 core duo, WUXGA, Quadro 2500FX for $1600

Hmm not wild about wuxga, but how does the nvidia 2500 stack up with say the X1600, x1800, or nvidia 7900? Just in terms of performance. The game gpus are quite versatile.

Any news on new candidates in this price category?

the 2500 is equivalent to a 7900gtx

That's pretty good. But the M90 prices are pretty high now. My laptop started smoking again, and I don't really have any more time to put up with repair drama. So what are new computers that fit under the original criteria I posted, but with Intel Duo 2 Core processors? And if possible reliable service would be nice.

If you need something right now and don't want the wsxga screen I would go with a s96J. Heres an example from GenTech PC. This is where I purchased mine from and had great customer service.

The big positive over the Sagers for Dell is that you can get several years' worth of support. If you get the CompleteCare or whatever it is, they supposedly send someone to fix your notebook if it goes down. Get the accidental warranty for 3-4 yrs and if you spill coke on the thing in the middle of a render, you're covered.

That and they're lighter than what you're used to. I don't know to explain the e1505s. I brought 2 back from the States recently for some local friends and they weren't heavy at all. The 9300 I use @ work now (boss got mad and had me buy a different puter since the 8790 was always breaking down) is very light compared to the 8790. Not even close.

If you can afford to be patient, you can play the Dell Outlet game and refresh all the time. Otherwise, you might want to Google around for deals/coupons/whatnot for Dell deals if you're interested.

Bummer about your 4750 smokin' again

Same Boat, but 17" screen

I'm looking for the same specs for 3d modeling and such. the big question for me is if the "workstation" GPU's are worth it. I've been looking at the sager 5760, toshiba p105-s9722, Asus w2j. From what i've heard the Nvidia cards seem to outperform ATI for 3d modeling. anyone have any experience with toshiba for 3dCAD modeling? Also, I'm coming from an ANCIENT inspiron8000 that hums the whole time it's on, not the fan, the harddrive i guess. do these fast GPU laptops run a noisy fan ALL the time?
thanks
i'm leaning toward the sager 5760, toshiba's res is only 900vertical

I think you should post your own thread for this, you will get quicker responses. I hear workstation cards may better for CAD. Although they are more expensive. Although it seems you have to spend about 2000 bucks for a decent 17" setup.
