7900GS vs. 7900GTX battery life?

Am I right in thinking you'll get more on the GS? If so, how much more?

Also, will we be able to upgrade to DX10 GPUS in the future- for definite.

Very very little difference. even with the 6800Go vs 7800GTX Go, the cores hardly took much more power when in idle or 2d condistions.

Well theres my last argument against the GTX, have to buy one now.

The 7900 GS uses slightly more than the x1400 does, and the GTX uses over twice as much as the GS does, and people report 6 hour battery lives with the Intel built in graphics, 4 hours with the x1400, and 2-3 hours with the 7900 GS. Simply because the voltage is close doesn't mean the power consumption will be. Don't expect to be running a GTX on batteries for long, even an overclocked GS will drain a 9 cell quickly.

That's like saying your '85 Civic gets the same gas mileage as your buddy's '87 Accord so the '06 Civic and '06 Accord will get the same mileage as well. - Based on a recent post, the power draw of the 7900 GTX is 45W and the 7900 GS is a mere 20W. - Based on my tinkering with video card BIOS's the 7900 GTX voltage is 24% higher than the 7900 GS (1.00V vs. 1.24V). Given all other conditions are equal, the GS will have much greater battery life.

See, now that's logic. Thankee matey!

Does anyone know if the 7900GS will have (much) better batterylife than the 7800 Go (non-GTX)? I believe it should, but are we talking 5% or more like 20%?

It uses about 2/3 the power (off the top of my head, may be wrong). I'm guessing you'll squeeze 30 minutes more out of your battery, tops.

You would have to ask somebody with a 7900GTX for comparison, but with my 7900GS I get 2:30 easy with everything on including wireless and screen brightness top.

It's hard to get a straight, accurate answer when it comes to something like this, as there's too many variables. CPU model and settings (underclocking, undervolting, cpu usage when in use and even in idle with background processes), hard drive speeds, BT/WLAN, optical drive usage, fan speeds, etc.

Well, if it's any comparison, I got ~1:20min with 7900 GTX with full brightness+wireless+bluetooth while mostly gaming (ragnarok online). Oh I turned the flashy LED lights off but I doubt they use that much power anyway.
edit: more info that might be useful: 7200rpm seagate hd (i'm the only person i know of with a xps m1710 that came with a seagate hd >_>), AVG+zone alarm in background, no OC of any sort, no use of dvd drive, fan regulated by the system automatically, and I think that's all the variables that might be significant to any degree.

don't know aboout 7900gs vs 7900gtx but my battery life went down over 45 min after going from x1400 to 7900gs . A full 53w battery went from 2:30min to 1:45. i should conside ra higher wattage battery.

Can anyone that upgraded from a 7800 Go to a 7900 GS comment on the change to battery life?

while gaming, yes. But when just browsing the web etc. the difference is negligible. See

http://anandtech.com/mobile/showdoc.aspx?i=2766&p=16

"The GeForce Go 7800 and 7900 GTX both apparently power down to a similar level when running off the battery, as battery life is nearly identical."

(This is Go 7800 on e1705 vs. 7900 GTX on m1710, but still)
