How is the integrated Creative HD soundchip?

I got my e1505 w/ that integrated Creative HD sound thingy. How is that? how's the quality? i plan to hook a 2.1 speaker to it, and they later on move to 5.1

It's a piece of software, nothing more. I have opened both a 1505 with the standard audio, and a 1505 with the creative stuff, and the boards are identical. That said, I don't notice any difference compared to the regular audio option.

damn!! i would've bought the audigy zs card for laptops. wtf

so if it's software, does dell give me a install cd? i'm going to reformat the hdd

Is there any benefit to using the software with the on-board speakers or headphones, or is the difference only noticeable with actual speakers? If there's no benefit with onboard speakers or headphones, I'm going to uninstall the Creative bloatware completely.

Software give you sound affect, individually control the base, left right speaker, nothing to write home about.

I'm going to uninstall it. It's annoying as it is that when you click the volume properties on the task bar, it takes ages for it to load that Creative-modified ugly thing.

The only tangible thing that it gives you is a software implementation of EAX. EAX itself is only somewhat useful in games (environmental effects), but a software implentation of it means that you'll be losing performance. Non-accelerated EAX isn't worth $20.

Does anyone know if there is any hardware at all in the chip that is enabled by having the creative stuff on the system? It is possible there are circuits on the chip that would not be enabled by default. Also, it is likely there is some level of EAX in hardware on the chip. I think at least EAX2 is pretty standard for most sound cards these days.

i checked the dell "help me choose" popup of that. it says there's no hardware difference from the normal integrated audio

now i'm pissed.

Yup, I fell for that too and ordered the SB audio. lol
post #14 of 27
Damn, me too.
I ordered it. Can't tell if there is a difference from my old intergrated on my 4700.
It's okay, I think many people did. Myself included.

Of course, my excuse is that I ordered it the first day they released it so I didn't have time to do any research to learn that it's just software.

What's you guys' excuse? *grin*

I did research it and a number of "opinions" were that is sounded "crisper", "less distorted when using MP3s", and that the 3D imaging was "neat" (stadium, hall, etc.).

I now disagree with all of those researched comments.

Heh, the placebo effect is quite nifty.
