Level of Gaming on T series Laptop

Hello, I was wondering in regards of the level of gaming that is capable with the T series laptop. I know they are primarily used for business but I am curious as to how a T43p series with a 128 Fire GL V3200 would do in par in playing WoW or CS source.
Any feedback is appreciated.

If it's DirectX, it'd work just fine.

HL2 worked great of my FireGL T2, which wasn't as powerful as the V3200. WoW will work just as well, as long as it's not OpenGL

OpenGL games are kinda screwy with the FireGLs...

I was intending on using it for both of those applications coincidentally...Though I'm curious about the OpenGL you refer towards.
Thank you for the reply. Now my gaming addictions doesn't have to be isolated at home. =D

It also depends on what you consider playable.

HL2 single player is playable in directx 9.0c
I get somewhere around 40-70 fps

CS:source online multiplayer can go as low as 10 fps using directx 9.0c .
I consider anything under 60 fps unplayable for multiplayer.
I'm a fps whore so I bump it down to directx 7.0 and get around 70-80 fps

The V3200 is a workstation class card. And workstation class cards are notorious for piss poor OpenGL game performance. (i.e. Doom 3, Quake 4)

These cards are also usually clocked slower (core and memory) to ensure greater stability, which to devs is more important than raw performance.

Cheers

Again, thank you for your feedback. It is appreciated. It does bring out more questions to me though...
What do the updates of Directx do if you can run CS source on an earlier version?
and for myself...should I install WoW or WC3?

I have direct x 9.0c installed. HL source engine allows the user to select the level of direct x be it 7.0, 8.0, 8.1, or 9.0

If you plan on playing FPS games (first person shooter) especially multiplayer. You will notice lag playing with direct x 9.0 . The V3200 can handle 9.0c but it doesn't do it as well as some other cards.

If you plan on playing WC3, I've played it and it works fine. T43p users seem the think that WOW works well also. Again these are not fps dependant games as are first person shooters.

The V3200 is aging. Did you look into the T60p's? They have the newer FireGL V5200 which is based of the x800 chip. Plus it has twice the vid memory.

And if gaming is your primary reason, I wouldn't go IBM. I'd get an XPS from dell.

Cheers

IBM's are on the whole a joke for gaming. T60p is really the closest thing they have to a gaming laptop.

I finished some games on my T41p...

I didn't mean that you couldn't game on them, it is just that they usually have a total of (1) gaming option and that usually can only run games because it is made for graphics professionals (and priced accordingly). Thus it doesn't make sense to pay for a T60p when you can get another laptop with an x1600 and a real hard drive for less cash if you game.

Yes but you don't get all the IBM goodies...

Exactly. I play lots of games on my R40, but they all kind suck in 3d qaming standards. I wish the R60 used the ati x1600...that way I'd pick it up in a heart beat. Of course, I wouldn't know if that is at all possible due to its configurations and design.

Now I'm looking at an ACER 5672...can't really decide because I'm a thinkpad fan, and other laptops dont compare to thinkpad's goodies in my opinion. The r40 didn't give me much problem for the 3 years I used it. But its about time to retire hero (letting my sister play with it once I get a new laptop)

Have you looked at the Z61m's. They are widescreen, Dual core, good graphics cards, not great. My buddy plays a lot of WoW on his older Z60m with an ATI 600 card and it looks better on his thinkpad than it does on his desktop.

What's that comment about real hard-drive? A 100gb 7200rpm HD in a notebook is very nice. Look at the sony SZ series if you want to talk about shitty hard drives. (120gb 4200rpm)
