Neither.

Get a laptop to handle personal life, and a desktop for 3D modeling. Youll spend less money, get a better modeling machine, and a laptop for portability.

Past that if you insist on getting a laptop for 3d get one with a decent card in it for modeling, noting that there is a difference between a gaming and a modeling card.

Dell M90 or IBM T60p
Ok, for 15.4" here is the competition:

IBM T60p - (actually 15"), FireGL 5200
Dell M65 - Quadro 350M
Dell M70 - QuadroFX Go 1400
Fujitsu Celsius h240 - FireGL 5200, not avail. in N. America
HP nw8440 - FireGL 5200

The only one without a Core Duo CPU is the M70. It's neither last-generation or the current.

For most of these notebooks there's a 17" counterpart with a more powerful graphics card, at the expense of a much bigger and energy-hogging system though.

I"ll also suggest a cheaper solution, the Dell latitude D820 with a 512MB NVIDIA Quadro NVS 120M. you get get it from dell outlet for less than $1000, 3 year warranty, nice specs.
Not a bad suggestion. I don't know how the 120M stacks up, but it ought to be really weak considering the 350M is way behind the 1500M and even the FireGL 5200 in all respects. 64-bit...eww.

On the other hand, for someone like myself this would save enough cash to allow for a more-than-decent desktop system as well.

well if your not going to be moving it around alot then get a desktop with like a 500-800 $ quadro or ati fire gl card. I'm going to be doing the same as you when i go to college, i'm going to go to fullsail college and major in graphics rendering and 3d modeling, then i wanna work at ubisoft montreal, sorry for the rant
post #12 of 22
No problem for the rant. I'm moving from Toronto to Montreal in a couple weeks. I've eyed Ubisoft, but gaming is not the direction my work is going in. Still, if my reel is good enough for them I'd definately take a job.

m90 cost more then 1500+ i can getthis for 800
post #16 of 22
For 800 that doesnt seem bad for a laptop, the two questions i would have is how sturdy is it, and how heavy is it?

That statement is an oxymoron.

Brand New and Used for less than 3 months dont go together in my mind

There are a few things missing from your question, which make it hard to answer well.

* what is your maximum budget
* what applications do you need to use
* what sort of complexityofmodels will you be using

For 3D modelling, you also need to think in terms of supported drivers and supported hardware for particular modelling packages. No point in buying a particular GPUif the package you have to use won't support it.

Comparison of three different Quadro FX mobile chipsets here - note particularly the graphic memory bandwidth:
http://www.nvidia.com/page/quadrofx_go.html
or, to compare with other models in more detail:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_11761.html

You might find these discussions useful:

http://www.highend3d.com/boards/inde...owtopic=223080

and this performance benchmark table:
http://www.gamepc.com/labs/view_cont...ookie%5Ftest=1

remember that your GPU is used for the modelling and low-quality but interactive rendering (wireframe, flat, gouraud and phong shading) while your CPU is used for high quality rendering (radiosity, ray-tracing).

Sumary - it depends. However, since you asked what 'the best' was, then the Dell Precision M90 looks like a solid choice and arguably the best currently available in a laptop.
