Hot, Hot, Hot

Everytime I walk by an Apple store in the Mall in various cities, I always stop in to see if Apple has addressed the heat issue with the MacBook and MacBook Pro. Nope, still hotter than heck. Parts of it, particularly just below the LCD is hot enough to use as an iron. I touched one today at Mall of Americas and I could not believe how hot it was.

On the plus side, the 17" MBP did not appear nearly as hot as the MacBook or MacBook Pro.

This issue has to be addressed before I'd touch one of those laptops.

Yeah, the 17 inchers seem to have much better heat dissipation.

Hopefully the Merom chips will reduce the heat significantly when they're added.

You know, compared with the Acer I use at work, it really isn't too much different. The Acer gets warm enough that using it as a LAPtop would be a bit on the uncomfortable side. Placed the MBP into a more mainstream light, when I did this (mind you purely subjective) comparison.

Well my Apple MacBook get kinda worm when the batteries is not charging but when the batteries is charging it gets really hot.

Yeah...my experience is similar to FUBARMS. It gets a bit warm on the bottom and top near the hinge, particularly when charging. BUT, still don't think it's too bad compared to my other laptops. And, given it's been VERY COLD here, I don't mind a little warmth

yeah, i too noticed that the 17" is really cool all over compared to the 15". Probably because of part placement and its bigger size. but also, you have to note that the computers are on probably all day and plugged in all day. They probably put them to sleep at night, but other than that, they are running constantly. But, they still tend to be a bit hot.

"Very Cold here" - where would that be? I'm thinking everybody except the Southern hemisphere is enjoying summer right now.

When you consider that they are JUST SITTING THERE, I don't think it should matter much that they are on all day. My laptop is docked and running all day and doesn't even get close to the heat the MB and MBP generate.

Some people come in and may load an app or two on them, but they don't do any real work on them; so for the most part, they just sit there and BAKE all day. I would think a little better design in the chassi should be able to remedy the problem, but who knows how long that will take.

Is Merom chips supposed to run cooler?

I'm in Sydney Australia (Southern hemisphere!), and we've had a record cold spell - brrrrr, and winter is just starting! My MacBook is warming my legs as I type...but I really don't find it all that hot.

It's just too weird to think about the fact that just as the temperature is inching towards 100 degrees here in Australia it's inching towards 0.
It was actually 7 degrees in Sydney yesterday (centigrade). It was so cold my husband's notebook wouldn't boot until it warmed up!

Thank Goodness for electric blankets and the fireplace...no central heating or air conditioning in the house. The weather is generally moderate here, but it's a bit of a strange time. BUT - sunshine today.

Apologies for the thread digression!

See, that boggles my mind. I know someone in Auckland and he's constantly complaining that he's hot as hell but his house doesn't have any AC or nothing!

Here in the states no one even thinks about building a house without AC...especially in places like Florida.

Hey,

I visited a Fry's Outlet store and went to the Apple section to try out one of the 15" Macbook Pros and they were plugged in and when I went up to go use one they were EXTREMELY COOL, literally. They didn't feel very warm at all. I messed around with it and played chess, opened about ten safari windows, played a song in iTunes with the Visualizer, and opened everything in the dock at the same time and continued to use it for about fifteen minutes and the laptop still seemed very cool. I asked the Apple-Department Manager at Fry's and he said they had been on since the morning (I went to the store in the evening).

At first I thought I had witnessed a miracle in the works, but then I went to the Apple Store around my house. After driving about twenty minutes, I finally got a chance to use some of the Macbook Pros. I had the exact same experience with each of them.

Is it just me or am I living in some sort of parallel universe where temperatures are inversed around my house? lol j/k

No, some guy went to an Apple store and thought to himself gee-wiz these seem like they're running hot and since he's a legend in his own mind it's a world wide problem that Apple MUST address so he can be happy.

I edited the 'Is it just me or is everyone else crazy?' part because I didn't want to look rude lol.

Well, perhaps it may be a problem on a very large scale and I may have just touched a handful of goodeggs. Although, like I've heard before, it always seems that the people who have problems with their Macbook/Pro's complain whereas the people who don't have problems with their machines tend to not post about their good experiences.

Again, I'm not trying to be rude, just trying to find out what the current situation is with the heat.

Since I have read about it in various reviews from trusted (at least by me) publications as well as in various forums I would believe there are heat issues with some of the MBP’s and MB’s. Just how hot do they run, or how widespread a problem, I don’t know since I haven’t seen any specs that have been verified. Other people that have used my area 51m 7700 think it is too hot to the touch but I don’t have any problem with it myself so the heat issue with the Mac Intel notebooks could just be user preference for all I know. The little bit I have gotten to use them (first revisions of both MBP and MB, about 40 minutes on each machine) I haven’t noticed a problem with heat. But then our local Apple reseller leaves them on battery most of the time and plugs them in when demonstrating them.

Every Fry's I've been to has had the MB's & MBP's running w/o their batteries in. They simply have the MagSafe connector & a big hole where the battery should go. Could that have anything to do w/ it? Perhaps not, but just a thought.

That's exactly what I was thinking too Sin. When I tested the Macbook Pro at Fry's, I asked the Apple-Department Manager there if I could test out the laptop with the battery inside. Sure enough, he let me do it. We plugged in the battery along with the Magsafe and I came back about thirty minutes later after browsing around and the Macbook Pro had become somewhat warmer, but it wasn't even close to being unbearable or even mildy hot. I couldn't check the temperature but it felt pretty cool.

I cook eggs on my MBP.

My ibook and my compaq 3370 were always hot as well.....so I am used to it.

You gotta pay to play buddy...can't take the heat...go buy a dell.
