Hot, Hot, Hot - Page 3

I didn't want to start up a new thread, but how is the head now on the Macbooks? Have the firmwares done anything?

Merom

I think you're best off waiting for the new MEROM processor editions of the Macbook (pro). These processors run a lot cooler and consume less energy. Rumor has it that these should be available within a month or two.
i would i no way say they run " A LOT COOLER" maybe 3-5 degrees.

and as for them going in the MB, its a crapshoot

Holy cow...im actualy worried about my macbook pro. Mine gets reealy reealy hot...like hot enough that it scalded my legs when i was rendering a video. It's gone way past "toasty"...i can hold it on my lap for longer than 7 seconds without getting some kind of burn. Dang when those processors get going...my macbook gets realy realy realy hot. I had to keep an ice pack on it just to bring the temperature down to a moderate level. When i don't use it as much, id blow a small fan over my macbook pro, and that seems to help to.

Should I be worried about my macbook getting that hot? If so, are there any macbook pro coolers out there?
Woah...do not put an ice pack on a hot computer. Some parts of the casing directly touching the pack could get so cold that condensation will start to form inside the computer and that is not good.

Use Temperature Monitor to see how hot it gets when it's running full bore and if it's over 150 degrees or so complain to Apple about the heat.
the temperature monitor that i have in the widget "istat pro" doesn't work for me...and I took the condensation of the ice pack into consideration. I made sure i didn't keep it there for long, and i wrapped it in a paper towl. Sure it wasn't the smartest thing to so....but i figured a laptop that was litteraly burning from video rendering needed to be cooled...and fast.
If iStat Pro doesn't work doesn't that tell you you should look for one that does?

And the processors inside the computer should be able to handle temperatures up to around 200 degrees, and the computer will shut itself down before it ever gets critical.
yeah i found one that works. right now im at 160 degress with just a few apps running. I can't wait to see how hot it'l get when i render video again.
I'd call Apple and complain that it gets way too hot for you—lie even and say you got burned if you have to—and get them to replace the logic board.
Would you guys recommend waiting to get a mac book pro until the MEROM processor comes out? Does anyone know exactly when it's coming out? Or should I just take the plunge now and purchase an mbp?
well amazon has that $200 rebate but thats all I really know.

I dont necessarily need to get one right but I figured since I had the money I could pick one up. I'm not exactly sure what a merom is but it seems to be something good.

thank you for your response!

if u r shopping for a MBP then it may be more tempting to wait as they will likely adopt the newer chips before the MBs, iMacs, and Minis get them. but as said, if u need it now, i can't imagine u'd be disappointed with the current line of chips.

the best return policy (and price w/ rebate) i've seen is through amazon, 30 days w/ no restocking fees the last i checked (though u'd be limited to stock systems). merom chips r supposed to be in systems pretty soon, so that'd give u a window to make your decision within.

Soon to be switching, but I'm lost on something. Is the heat issue resolved in any way for the older systems? Im in the PC world and my centrino notebook runs at a cool 42degrees while these MB/MBP supposedly run at 60-100.

Amazon has the 1.83 MBP for $1500 ($1699-200rebate + no tax). I was considering a black macbook but now its tough to ignore the pro. Any reason to still stick with the MB?

FWIW Dept: Except for the heat/mooing issue, which Apple seems to have addressed with the last update, nothing about which I'm aware will dissappoint you with the current machines. It is a PITA, though, to buy something which becomes outdated only a few weeks down the road, and Merom will probably cause that to happen to current notebooks.

The Merom will use less power than the current Yonah chips and will start at higher clock speeds. Everyone says it'll run cooler, however, an article I read the other week puts the Merom as having a top heat output as slightly higher than the current chips, but I don't know if that's under full load, or with minimal cooling or any of that so I'm not sure.

If anything, however, they should run cooler simply by the fact that Apple will have, hopefully, revised the design of the internals for better airflow and, again hopefully, stopped using whole tubes of thermal paste on the processors/heatsinks.

Well, i don't have an Acer laptop, but the Macbook i'm typing on now (i just got it yesterday), is MUCH hotter than my 700m AND my iXPS2 (when it's not gaming). Do Macs not do speed stepping or something? So far, i'm 50/50 on returning this. But i have 2 weeks to decide.

I compared viewing experience of a DVD which I brought on the matte vs. glossy screen and the color saturation was simply amazing on the glossy screen. I would highly recomment the glossy screen

Screen is VERY bright, but it's average imo. My 700m and iXPS2 screens are far superior to this Macbook. At very small fonts, like on my calendar in my google homepage, the fonts aren't smoothed (and yes, i've set font smoothing to work at up to 4pt). And i find i always need to adjust the angle of my display to get it at the optimal angle... something i rarely had to do with my other laptops.

But yeah, this screen is bright. When i switched over to my iXPS2 now and then, it takes a moment for my eyes to adjust to the dimmer level (but my 700m is brighter than my iXPS2).

Kakaze - that's essentially what I've gathered from what I've read. I'm not expecting a huge difference in heat generation, but we'll see soon enough. Some Core 2 Duo notebooks are being announced now, and I'd expect Apple to be along shortly.

Here's a comparison AnandTech did on the 2.33 Core Duo vs Core 2 Duo. Seems the limiting factor for now is the Core 2 Duo cannot take advantage of the faster FSB with the current mobile chipsets - so probably more improvements after the first of the year.

hey, where did the fanboys, I mean the Andy guy and the other go? Hey come back and put in some beautiful remarks of yours. I love the flaming war and this thread had potential. It was good break from my boring afternoon classes. What was it? Macmac and Macbashers? funny...
The heat is prominent. jjfcpa's observation is correct. I also went to a couple of mac stores and touched them. One of them I go there quite often since it is right by my campus cafeteria where I go for lunch. Everytime I touched it, it was hot, not warm, around F1 ~F4 key area. I could not keep my finger on there. I don't know about scalding but definitely worrisome and uncomfortable and HOT. The notebook were not performing anything heavy because I hang around there quite a while quite often looking a some magazines and it was just running idle. That much heat is still unacceptable even if it was running some demanding apps. The place was air-conditioned so it was quite cool. No, I am not overly sensitive about heat. And yes, it was main reason I stopped considering MBP for purchase. I doubt it but I hope it is fixed with the new release.
Well, i've had it for a few days now, and i've gone from 50/50 to returning it to about 75/25 returning it. The heat is just too much of an issue for me. The only thing that may save it if the Targus Lapdesk works as good as i like it to.
