Asus W3J Questions

Thread Starter
1.) Is the ATA hard drive in the W3J bad? Should it affect whether or not I buy this notebook? Is it slower than a SATA hard drive? How much slower?

2.) Is the 14 inch screen comfortable to play games on? Does it feel too small?

3.) Is the W3J upgradeable to the Core 2 Duo (Merom) processor?

4.) Does the W3J have a sturdy build? Is it solid? Is it built like a rock?

5.) Will the W3J last 4-5 years without becoming technologically obsolete?

6.) Is the W3J a good notebook for college?

7.) Is Asus support good? Is it reliable? Will I get screwed if I have a problem with my notebook?

I have been researching this info too. What I have found so far (Concensus says)

The notebook is all together fast! The 7200 rpm drive is well worth it though there is slightly more heat and less battery.

2.) Is the 14 inch screen comfortable to play games on? Does it feel too small?
Depends on the person. Most seem to e fine with it. Some are gaming on 12"

3.) Is the W3J upgradeable to the Core 2 Duo (Merom) processor?
This is not know yet although it is probable because they are said to have the same connetion. This notebook has as good a chance as any other notebook out there right now of being upgradeable in this department.

4.) Does the W3J have a sturdy build? Is it solid? Is it built like a rock?
100% One of the best if not the best built notebooks.

5.) Will the W3J last 4-5 years without becoming technologically obsolete?
UGH I am not sure anything can qualify for this as a 100% answer. Everything becomes obsolete but there are some good options on this notebook which will hold you over. It also depends on what you are doing.

6.) Is the W3J a good notebook for college?
absolutely

7.) Is Asus support good? Is it reliable? Will I get screwed if I have a problem with my notebook?
NO! Asus has crappy support but the community in the forums is great. You have less of a chance of needing support with ASUS because their notebooks are so well built.

This is a consensus answer? Although I agree that Asus notebooks are built well and that the forums are a good place to get info & help (otherwise I wouldn't post here), I don't think Asus support is bad. They seem competent from my limited experience with them and what I've read around here. Please don't misconstrue this as me saying that there's nothing wrong with them:, though. Their advertising and pre-release information distribution isn't very good, and their US website is usually horribly out of date. However, that said, I've heard more good things about their support than bad.

The main concern now is that everything is moving over to SATA so future upgrades will be more expensive and harder to get. I looked at the 7200 rpm 100 gig hitachi drive and the PATA was over 25% more(unless its a typo). You won't notice any speed differences between the two at the moment.

2.) Is the 14 inch screen comfortable to play games on? Does it feel too small?
If you play games at native resolution, i would say it's great. Going from a 15.4" widescreen i noticed that older games(mainly 2d) took some getting used to.. But F.E.A.R. is just lovely.

3.) Is the W3J upgradeable to the Core 2 Duo (Merom) processor?
Not 100% sure, but i believe so.

4.) Does the W3J have a sturdy build? Is it solid? Is it built like a rock?
Yes. Like a rock maybe not, but there is very little flex and just holding it feels more sturdy then my old mitac and dell.

5.) Will the W3J last 4-5 years without becoming technologically obsolete?
If you play games then probably not more then 2-3. But casual users should be more then adequate.

6.) Is the W3J a good notebook for college?
I can't tell you how light it feels to shed that 1 pound from my 15.4" notebook.

7.) Is Asus support good? Is it reliable? Will I get screwed if I have a problem with my notebook?
My first Asus notebook so i'm not sure. They have international warranty though.
