whats on the intel side with motherboards?
you're going to have to wait untill conroe comes out there. It will use lga775, which has been out for some time, but i would wait for mobos that officially support it out of the box.

future proofing

on the amd side

socket AM2 is the way to go but you absolutly need to ddr2 800 if you want to get the same sort of performance out the system compared to ddr-400 due to increases in memory latency (it might be faster in terms of clock speed but it takes more clocks to transfer). Other than that your looking at exactly the same performance of socket 939 systems, until amd overhauls there architecture witch is scheduled for early 2007.

intel side

conroe is coming and from preliminary tests on engineering samples its going to be mighty fast indeed. Intel used the team of engineers that developped the pentium m to develop conroe/merom. So its out with netburst (finally) and in with the core microarchitecture. For mobos your looking at 965 chipsets witch will also be the end of ide/ata support from intel chipsets. the intel mobos and processors should be showing up late july, early august.

and thats all i have to say about that

alright then sounds like the easy way would be upgrading the ram.

if 2 gigs of pc2700 desktop ram for 110 bucks a good price or is there better?
2 Gb's for $110 is crazy cheap, especially considering back around 1997 when I spent something like $150 for 32 Mb of regular crappy EDO RAM

BUT, I personally never buy the cheapest RAM, I don't feel it's worth the risk. For my desktops I only buy Corsair and usually whatever is near the top of the line. I also don't buy top of the line because it's usually significantly more expensive and not much better than the 2nd or 3rd from best..
That's just me though and it's your money, so spend it how you deem best.
BTW, nice color change

hmm and as for graphics cards for the computer i found the agp cards but you said there is othe cards that are much better and gives you more bang for your buck. which ones were you speaking of?

or do i have to stick with ati ?

yea true. i only buy the cheapest ram when im on a tight budget and it gets the job done.

yea i kind of like the new color. the red was cool. well kinda cool if you know what i mean.

if it has an AGP slot then it can take any AGP card, I forgot to ask earlier why it could only take those select few..
it doesn't happen to be a small case does it?? some of the real thing cases can only take half height cards, which are a pain in the ass to find and always more expensive than the normal sized ones.
Roboto was talking about PCI Express cards, which are the latest and greatest. They really are that good and even the low end PCI-E cards will beat most AGP cards for much less money.
Of course someone will mention that there are high end AGP cards still, but they're getting harder and harder to find and will probably go up in price. So I suppose you can get a sorta nice AGP card now and hold off on a really nice one until you can afford a new mobo that supports PCI-E.
BTW, I know how it is to be tight on money, it sucks..

well i think its a mid size case. i dunno if its a large case.
how can you tell if your case is mid size or large?

i dont wanna get a card then it dont fit . i had enough of those days.

could you name out some other cards by different companies that are compatible with mines?
Your computer case is mid-size and definitely has a vacant 8x agp slot. So you can fit any agp card in it. Ebay definitely will have tons of this still for sale. There are numerous brands and some of the more popular brands are: EVGA, BFG, PNY, ASUS, etc. They come in numerous speeds and memory configuration. Both ATI and Nvidia produced these cards.
