E1405 (Samsung) vs. E1405 (AUO) - Page 2

Well, I've just requested a replacement. Now, if the new system will be worse than the old one, will they let me keep the old one?

I was speaking in general since most of my experience has been with the E1505 or E1705. I have no idea what screen comes with the M1210, E1405 or whatever else.

But Dell will treat the E1405 like anything else although I guess maybe customers from their premium XPS line may get better service.

A few people on fatwallet reported getting LG-Phillips with their 1405. Dell parts number is G9653. Apparently, these are the best.

How can you tell what LCD panel you really have? I mean the service-tag list says it's a Samsung or whatever, but how can you verify that on the laptop itself?

Because most sane people don't sit there staring at their taskbar to even notice. If you want a perfect screen I'd suggest stop wasting your time with Dell. Dell's are typically cheaper for a reason. IMO, Fujitsu, Sony, and Toshiba have vastly superior displays. No wonder they cost more, too.

Some people luck out with their screens. Most, however, do not.

I considered buying another line cause the screen and case was important to me, but I don't have so much $ that it was important enough to justify an additional $1k or so to get the same specs in a different brand.

People think that spending $1200 or so should guarantee them the best product as it's a lot of money. While I agree that that is a lot of money to most of us, it's not that much in the laptop world. You pay mid-end prices, you get mid-end products e.g. I don't expect to get a Bose stereo in a Toyota Camry as opposed to paying more for a Lexus.

Not really. Today I stopped by my local CompUSA and some of the Sonys and Toshibas, and almost all HPs also had dreaded Samsung screens - I could instantly recognize them. Apple, by the way, uses Samsungs almost exclusively. However, Jobs recently said that other laptop manufacturers use the displays rejected by Apple.

I don't see how you can't notice unless you never notice the screen which you're looking at while using the laptop , or have never used or seen another computer with Windows XP

Samsung is capable of making great LCDs. Their LCD TVs are some of the top rated in the industry. Dell is willing to pay Sumsung to make their panels for a particular price. How much Dell is willing to pay depends on the quality of panel your going to get out of Samsung or any other manufacturer.

I've had several Toshiba laptops with Samsung displays which exhibited abosolutely no light leakage and crisp colors, unlike their Dell counterparts. I'd wager they are paying Samsung a bit more for more tolerant specs.

Just call Dell and complain. Then tell them that you'd rather not deal with getting a whole new system because you already have a lot of programs on your new computer and that you can replace the LCD yourself. If you get the LG it's the same as used in the D620 so you should be fine. From what i understand it's rare to get that though.

Samsungs are used in the D620 as well.
