Acer Aspire 5672 with x1600 review

Thread Starter
This is my first review so forgive the typos. I ordered an Acer Aspire 5672 with the x1600 graphics card from newegg for $1069.99 and free three day shipping (awesome deal). So far I am satisfied with my purchase. The 1.66ghz dual core is pretty fast and multitasking is a breeze. Initial start up was ridiculous; it took like 20 min before I could actually use my laptop. It first had to install stuff, and then I had to burn a restore disk. The build quality is very average or even below average from what I have seen, it also feels kind of cheap, but hey it was only $1069. It has a whole bunch of features for its price and a 120 GB HDD! (2 60 GB portions) that’s insane (actually it is only about 100GB) but my desktop doesn’t even have that much. As for problems I have one dead or stuck pixel (it stays white), the left side of the screen is not attached to the plastic part, there is a few millimeters of space between the screen and the plastic (I hope this does not cause any problems!), and also the plastic area right above my touch pad has curved upward due to the heat but that is ok. I think many people over exaggerate the heat of this laptop, it does get hot, but nowhere close to hurting someone’s hand, my old gateway gets even hotter and has lasted me three years with no problems. It is around 51-53 degrees Celsius idle. The screen resolution is average quality but it is bright. I have heard from other people that the keyboard is mushy, but to me it is fine and there are no problems with it. Sound is bad lol and this is compared to my three year old gateway laptop. Bluetooth is a nice feature and works. I like that there are usb ports on both sides of the laptop and the jacks for other things like headphones are on the front. The slot loading DVD drive is really cool and is not at all slow even though it is 5400 rpms. The webcam is a cool feature, but has major lag when on default settings and the resolution is not really good. As for the looks, this laptop is one of the better looking notebooks imo. It is thinner than the dell e1505 but seems to be less wide, not really sure though. Games run nicely, CS:S runs at 100 fps constantly on high settings, drops a tiny bit when in heavy smoke, I am gonna try out Battlefield 2 later. I am not sure how to test the battery so I will not comment on that. To sum it all up:

Score: out of 10

Build Quality - 5
Looks - 9
Screen – 7
Sound – 5
Features – 10
Value – 10
Performance – 8
Avg. – 7.7
So basically if this laptop was a girl, I would go out with her.
I will post pictures and benchmarks later after I reinstall windows. Also does anyone know what Acer porgams I should keep and where to get them? Also, anyone know if my partially detached screen from the plastic will cause my any problems? Well I hope nothing else goes wrong, this is my college laptop and has to last me all four years.

The plastic surrounding the screen is just a cover, won't hurt but feels quirky. You may go back to Acer to have it replaced.

Do you see grainy MIDTONES for grey, light blue, ight green, light red etc. ?
My 5673 with X1600 have this problem. Picture quality suffers due to this.

thanks for your imput on the machine. it seems ill be getting one from newegg too, soon.

Can you post your performanse in other games if you have them? battlefield 2 is ineed a game i would like to play.

Do you think the heat it generates impacts performance? in mine does, as it gets too hot and underclocks for a few seconds. go figure, idle i have about 54°c and when cpu is at 100% at 1.6ghz, it slowly goes to 84°C!

anyways, they say your model gets as hot as 70°C which for me is more than acceptable.
