will a 7900 GS work in a M170/XPS gen 2?

Well I e-mailed dell escalation about my issues with the 3007WFP and they are going to send me a 7900 GS(I assume its the GS) to replace my 7800 GTX. I know it is a slight downgrade; however, I will be happy if it works. Anyway I asked (verifying that it will work with the M170/XPS gen 2, and the guy from dell headquarters said it would with the newest bios).

So, has anyone actually tried this? I know the 7800 doesnt work or the 7900 gtx from what I have heard, but what about the 7900 gs.

Anyway I got a dispatch number and I was able to look it up it lists

System Type:XPS/Inspiron XPS Gen 2
near the top of the page on my support history details and for aprts information it shows this as a description:

CARD (CIRCUIT), GRAPHICS, 256MB, I9400, G71

So what do you guys think? I have never even heard of dell shipping out a i9400 card for a m170 LOL, I hope it fixes my issues though!

Im pretty sure it wont fit since its the same form factor as the 7800 and 7900 gtx...

Well more than likely whoever you talked to is on some wacky crack. Unless Dell made a new form factor 7900 to fit the Gen 2 and sent out a new bios update I doulbt it will work.

See this thread on this subject:

Um, I'd consider it an upgrade if it's actually going to happen. The 7900 GS uses less power, doesn't require the 130W brick and once OC'd, it outperforms the 7800 GTX bigtime in 3DMark05/06. Look here -> http://www.notebookforums.com/thread157393.html

Yeah I didnt know if anyeone had actually tested with the 7900 GS though, maybe that works? seems unlikely but who knows, the dell guy reassured me, we shall see. I just put another HD in my desktop, can you count how many I have?

I REALLY want to see what happens with this thread. A new form factor 7900 to fit the XPS2 will make mucho people happy.

Besides, I say 8 because I can count through dust

Just to add, maybe I am getting a non-standard one? from what I found on the forum the part number for the 7900 gs is UF804, however the one on my dispatch number shows: DG008, weird eh? I did a search for DG008 on the forum and found nothing, makes me wonder...

Knowing Dell with being tight lipped and all, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a new form factor.

Knowing Dell with disregarding customers and all, I wouldn't be surprised if there was no new form factor.

DG008 = G71 or 7900gs too. I am not sure if they are messing with you or they really have those 7900gs for the XPS M170/Gen2. But aren't you getting a card with less PP? The only thing is that it scores higher on 3dmark, but are you sure that it will perform the same during gaming?

I'm missing the point, what boat?

We both have an xps2 with a 7800gtx, and a dell 3007wfp. It wont run the monitor in full rez because the go cards arent dual link.

well, it wont run the cards because of a video bios problem, Doesnt run them correctly as a single-link should or as a dual-link should. Everything detects them as dual-link cards, and but it is still unclear as to whether they really are not dual link and the bios is misreporting them (video bios issue), or they are dual link and support isnt completely written for it in the bios (video bios issue). So either way its a video bios issue with these cards. If you want to run any relatively current drivers you only have two choices that will work with the 7800 gtx and the 3007WFP at only 1280x800, all the newer drivers wont even work at 1280x800, you just get lines in the screen.

Okay, lol well that’s the long explanation

The onlky Dual Link card atm is 6800Go. I don't think the 7900GTX is even dual link.
