quad xeon server

I'm trying to configure a rack-mounted server for intense real-time processing and number crunching.

I want quad xeon processors, say 3.0 GH or higher.

A good example would be a dell poweredge server (model 6850) listing around $10k. I can pick one up with quad single core xeon 3.16G for just under $6k on ebay

Are the new dual core xeons worth the premium?

Any suggestions on buying or building at a better price? I'd be comfortable adding the RAM and hard drives myself, but I do need 4GB RAM and two hard drives, RAID 0.

Hard to say for sure if it is overkill. But, if anything, it may not be enough.

It must handle a stream of data exceeding 10MB per second, with all being stored in RAM and periodically copied to HD plus some decision making which may require additional processing including number crunching. While occasional failures are not catastrophic, each failure is potentially costly.

Do you know of a user's group ( of server hardware, not drugs) I could go to?

Unless you count the advils and pepcids i pop from time to time, it it a drug-free zone
