Dilemma between 5950 and 9800xt

Ok guys, I really need some help. I would like to purchase a desktop system, but I dont know whether I should buy a GeForceā„¢ FX 5950 Ultra 256MB 8x AGP w/DVI & S-Video or a ATI RADEONā„¢ 9800 XT 256MB 8x AGP w/DVI & S-Video. Also whats the difference between regular CPU and Prescott. And one more thing, do omega drivers really make a difference in fps for games such as Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic. Thank you so much for your help.

I should mention I hope to play Half-life 2 and Doom III with no problems at high settings.

This is a laptop forum, so it might be kinda difficult getting answers on desktop questions.

9800XT..

9800XT is far and away a better card and a better value. Plus you get a voucher for a free copy of Half Life 2.

Wait until Half-life 2 or Doom 3 comes out, then make your purchase. A bunch of new cards will be out before then.

This is a notebook forum, why are you posting here?

"Desktops and Other Technology"

Get the 9800XT, 5950 may have high clock speeds, but the overall performance by the 9800XT is better. Also, nVidia cards die on pixel shaded games.

chpft, everyone here is ATI fan boys. I personaly like the nVidia's quality. I dont care if i only get 60 fps (anything higher is a waste, since your eyes cant see the difference). Wait a couple of months 'til the nv40 comes out it is 3 times better then the 5900 ultra and gets 25,000 3d marks (stock).

I'm no ATI fanboy. I'm just saying if you got both top of the line cards (which I can't afford) get the ATI. My old Geforce2 MX400 gave me some good times playing Counter-Strike

I too am not an "ati fan boy", but I do believe they are putting out the better cards right now. When the new set of cards come out in April/May we will see who wins again. If last two years has shown us anything it will be ATI. NVIDIA needs to start focusing on putting out the best card that technology will allow. The only thing I have seen from them lately is their huge marketing department trying to cover up their cards shortcomings..........

I'm no expert on the technical aspects of these things, but I have visited many forums and read dozens of discussions on graphic cards and the unanimous consensus is that the current ATI cards are considerably better than current NVIDIA cards. Maybe that will change when the next generation of cards comes out, but for whatever reason ATI is the hands down winner for the current generation. Over the last year or two NVIDIA has been quite dishonest, or at the very least misleading, about their product in attempt to hide this. So when searching the net for advice be warned, there is a good chance you are not getting the truth. A couple sites I know of off the top of my head with pretty good forums on this stuff is Guru3d.com and Rage3d.com.

I am a fan of Nvidia cards, but lately I am leaning towards ATI...remember the difference is probably less than one percent in any series of benchmarks, so either way you're doing OK.

i used to be a fan of nvidia but they havent been on the ball (well if the rumors are true about there new card then i take that back) but given those two choices i take the 9800xt.

In my experience with the two cards i think it comes down to your personal preference.

From what i have noticed, and please this is my opinion only, nVidia cards show graphical content better when AA and AF settings are not turned on. But when you switch these settings on, ATI clearly shines. I play all my games with AA and AF settings on unless i'm playing the game on my screen's native resolution (1920 x 1200), of course, i don't need AA and AF enables on this resolution. Undoubtedly though, when they aren't enabled, i think nVidia has an advantage. Slight one, but one nonetheless.

that doesn't matter anyway, you're not stupposed to use your first pci slot anyway. (if you use an AGP card)
