Faulty Router?

Ok guy here’s when I have my router plugged in everything works fine with my computer until I turn the other one on that’s connected wirelessly everything goes all funny... The internet on both computers will slow down drastically not a little but it will come to a crawl plus a lot of web sites won’t even load! This is really bugging me. Does u think it’s busted? I guess it won’t hurt to take it back beings I just got it.

My friend who lives right in my neighborhood has the same ISP same router or close to the same router and he has at least 4 computers on and running at the same time. One time I went over there and hooked my AW up and on my computer I was dl Americas Army playing COD online and he was playing another game online! So I was so excited when I got high-speed that I would be able to run more then 1 computer online at the same time without problems.

I have done what most of you said I don’t know anything else it could be.
The internet works fine when I am just running off the modem. I mean I can Download at least 2 large files while listening to internet radio over itunes and playing BF2 at all the same time and she doesn’t even chug!.

O and I just remembered this last night when I went to play an online game it would lag out a soon as I went to the multiplayer page in the games menu It seems like it would lag when It was trying to get a connection. When there was. and No it was not my fire wall I have it set to except my games. So I really don’t know what would you guys do?

Thanks
Guys

sry for posting so much about internet lately but I realy want to get this fixed up.

I believe he's got a linksys....i've never had any luck with them. Believe it or not, the best router i've ever had (and currently using) is a microsoft router :X

Yes, it could be the router. You could just get a new one--but one thing I'd recommend you try first is to look at the router logs. See if they can give you some clues as to what's going on. If you can't figure the logs out, you could post some of them here for some of the others to have a look.

hmm, I've always had Linksys and never had a problem. Actually, the very first wireless router I bought was a d link and that was a problem right out of the box. It wouldn't reach downstairs in my house..
I would suggest giving more details with the problem though, especially the brand, model, exactly what you're connecting to and maybe a censored screen shot of some of your settings. censor out your SSID, computer/network name and all the personal info of course..

^Ah yes, sorry: forgot to mention to censor out the ID and such. What dman said.

For the most part everyone with a Linksys router loves theirs. I've actually owned 2 of them because I just thought the first one I had was faulty or something. For some reason I ALWAYS had major trouble with internet connection speed, downloading with bittorrent and many other issues that would come up. I thought it was just me, so...went to some of the firmware forums and tried to get help there and....no luck, the router wasn't right for me.

yep, that's usually the case when it comes to computers and car insurance
what works for one person is awful for someone else. weird how that happens

Ok thanks guys

Linksys- Wireless-G (802.11g) Model No.: WRT54G

Idk what anything means? Like when I got to my router by typing in the IP everythings like in a foreign language to me! what are logs? the only thing I saw for logs was a thing where you can disable or enable it and mine was set to disable. im lost when it comes to this stuff Im more of a hardware guy not software.

Thanks
Guys

I don't know the Linksys webserver very well: I'm using a D-Link right now. Someone around here will help you out with that.

However, I have another suggestion for you to try: try plugging your mom's computer directly into the router via ethernet cable. So you should have both computers on, both connected to the router via cables. See if the behavior changes (gets better).

If it does, then the problem's more likely to be with the router (it could simply be the Linksys needs proper configuration).

If it doesn't, then the problem might be with your mom's computer--for example it might be putting out excessive traffic onto the 'net because it's been zombied...

As I said, plug it (your mom's computer) in directly to the router using an ethernet cable. See if your problems get better, worse, or stay the same.

Note on the WRT54G- Mine worked flawless for over a year and then suddenly needed to be power cycled at least once a day. I replaced it pretty quick with a WRT54GS (w/speedbooster), so I'm not sure if it was just a bad firmware version or if there was indeed a problem. It would basically lock up on me and just flat out not work, not a slow down problem.
I would definitely upgrade your firmware though and power cycle it too.
