Gentech?

Thread Starter
TO:Gentech Customers
How was the build quality for the S96J when it arrived and is the warranty good?
I dont know much about warranties.
What should I get:
T2500+slot load dvd+usb bluetooth
or
T2600+DVD multidrive
?
Rest of the stats are 2gb of 667 mhz ram, 7.2k 100gb drive, intel pro/wireless.
When does GenTech get their next shipment of S96j come in?

And finally should I go for the cheap price, GenTech, or warranty, PowerNotebook?
Thanks for all the replies

I just ordered the Asus VBI S96J f rom Mwave.com, but there's no mention of built-in webcam in their ads. Is that a standard feature or an add-on ?

Thanks for feedback

Make sure you go the S96J, and NOT the S96F.

I'm sorry about hijacking your thread, but I have to ask, how does $1328 for this system sound? From Gentech:

Intel VBI Asus S96J Core Duo Barebone 15.4 Inch WXGA/ATI X1600 256MB/Built-in Webcam/Combo

CPU: Intel® Yonah Core-Duo T2400 1.83GHz 2M 667 FSB
RAM: Corsair 1GB DDR-2 667 SODIMM (2X512)
HD: 80GB 5400rpm S-ATA
Internal Wireless Card: Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945 Tri-mode 802.11a/b/g
Warranty: 1st Year GenTech, 2nd Year Intel Limited Warranty
Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound

Availability: Pre-Order, ETA end of June
Total: $1,328.00

I plan to use the computer for everyday things (like word/internet/movies) but also like to do some gaming (AoE III, HL2, Guildwars). I'm playing on a Radeon 9800/3.0GHz p4, 1 GB pc3200 (200 MHz…) right now and it works ok, so I think this will definitely be an improvement.

Same system (Ram=533mhz, buy 667 mhz ram from newegg for same price) at Mwave.com $1253.90

I'm dealing with the exact same thing Ham. Both companies seem to be really good. I don't know how valuable the extra year at powernotebooks is though. Since I can't do the cash option, mine is $106 more at powernotebooks. It would be worth it if something that was determined to be equipment malfunction happened, but if nothing happens, $106 is a lot to throw away. Hmmm, I'm just not sure what I am going to do yet. Just make sure to let us know.

Talking about warranties, what is Gentech's policy about dead pixels? Also, I'm a little confused about the Verified by Intel warranty. What does that cover?

The Gentech/Intel warranty covers entire notebook, dead pixle policy is the same as Asus: 5 dark or 2 bright wihin 1 square inch.

3 year warranty is optional and it's your choice to add it, some people might think pay for additional 3 year warranty is not neccessory since Intel will cover barebone for 2 years, and the rest components will have manufacturer's warranty example CPU has Intel 3 year warranty and 5 years from Seagate, Corsair and Kingston has lifetime warranty, but some people bought additional warranty because they will like to deal with 1 company instead of different companies for different componets, but again, the choice is all yours, we don't offer 3 years warranty as our standard warranty so we don't have to pass the cost to customers, instead we offer it as optional.

Does anyone know how frequent dead pixels are on the S96J? If you had 20 dark, but they weren't all in the one square inch, you could not get it replaced?

If you have 5+ dark anywhere in the screen then they will replace it, but bright pixels has to be 2+ per square inch.
Also I havne't hear anyone tell me about they have dead pixels on S96J yet.

Okay. Dead pixels just worry me. That's probably the biggest reserve I have about buying this laptop, but if no one has complained to you (I have heard of one person having 1) then it apparently isn't too frequent of a problem. I will probably be ordering this Friday from gentech, so I'm really mulling over my last minute decisions about it.

While I have your attention Ken, when will you be getting in your next shipment? I know the website said ETA end of June, but it still said that today, so I wasn't sure if the next shipment were here or not.
You may also read NBR, I don't see anyone has complain about dead pixles on S96J, at least not yet.

End of June and another shipment on July 14th.

Yeah, I just found NBF tonight. Someone on NBR said gentech was over here more often, so I decided to make an account over here too. I know I read somewhere that someone had 1 dead pixel. They posted a list of goods and bads, and the only bad thing was that one dead pixel. But yeah, other than that I have not heard of any.

Thanks! Just another quick question though, on your site it doesn't list a manufacturer for your 5400 rpm hdd and I was just wondering who that would be.

It could be Hitachi or Toshiba and sometimes we use Fujitsu, so it could be any brand depends on the batch we bought at the time.

for some personal reasons I don't go there that often, I only have 2 posts over there, people seem more friendly over here.
I see. I have noticed several people over here are also over there, but I'm sorry you have had an unpleasant experience over there. Like I said, I just found this place, so I will definitely be around here a lot now. Lol, and as I approach my purchase, I will probably be posting even more frequently.
