Important Macbook Pro 15 inch Questions

Thread Starter
1.) Will the Macbook Pro be able to run Windows Vista?

2.) Will I be able to play Counter Strike Source with fairly decent FPS on the Macbook Pro, using Windows?

3.) Are there any disadvantages of using Windows on the Macbook Pro over a regular Windows PC?

4.) Would you recommend a Macbook Pro for a college student who will mostly be using Windows, but will try to learn the Mac OS along the way?

5.) Will a XP Pro CD with Service Pack 2 that I got with my Delll laptop work to install XP on the Macbook Pro?

6.) Will I be able to upgrade the current Macbook Pro to the Merom processor myself?

7.) When using the Windows portion of the Macbook pro, will the wireless internet and all of the other drivers except the iSight work?

8.) After installing Windows on the Macbook pro, where do I get the drivers needed for the laptop to function properly?

Those are all the questions I have for now. I want the Macbook Pro becase it looks SOO nice. It has everything I need in a laptop, except for the fact that it is not solely Windows. Still though, I want this machine. Will the Macbook Pro run Windows flawlessly? Will it run it just as if I was running from a windows pc? I will try to learn the Mac OS, but will still need the Windows portion for a lot of my personal needs. Please help.

1. Well, since Vista isn't officially out, no one knows for sure. But, some people have successfully installed the beta version.

2. Yes, with 128MB, even better with 256MB.

3. No

4. Yes. I'm sure you'll end up using OS X more often if you give it time.

5. I'm not sure. I don't think you'll want to use that cd anyways because of all the other crap it installs, unless dell changed their cds.

6. I don't think so since they solder the cpus to the logic board.

7. Yep. I'm sure that they will be able to get everything working by next year after the preview of Leopard.

8. I think Boot Camp does all the work for you. It'll install all the necessary drivers that work so far.

Most of your questions have been answered but I have a couple of things to add
1.I suggest you search more on the internet for the Vista solution. I have seen it done but it isn’t easy, Apple does not support Vista with Boot Camp.
2.Definitely recommend 256mb video RAM
3.Boot Camp is still in beta and Apple doesn’t provide support for it or Windows, other than that, and what is written below, none that I know of.
4.Not sure what your requirements are for a college computer.
5.If it is an OEM install disk it should work. But it is against your MS EULA to install it on any machine other than the one it is originally installed on, so not legal in the US. I don’t know if you would be able to get any downloads from MS (updates, security fixes) that would require validation.
6.Not sure, as stated above Macs usually have the CPU soldered in.
7.There are a few problems with Boot Camp (it is still beta), no iSight drivers, keyboard backlight doesn’t work, some sound issues, probably a couple more I can’t think of off the top of my head. I would hope these issues are gone when Leopard comes out with Boot Camp 1.0 (or whatever they decide to call it).
8.Boot Camp includes all the current known drivers for Windows XP on Intel based Mac hardware.
